The STEM Women of Time's Most Influential People

Time magazine unveiled its annual list of the most influential people in the world, and while it's full of household names from political figures like President Barack Obama to entertainment mogul Jay-Z and celebrated writer-director-actress Lena Dunham, female leaders in science and technology also made the cut among the "artists and leaders .

Time magazine unveiled its annual list of the most influential people in the world, and while it's full of household names from political figures like President Barack Obama to entertainment mogul Jay-Z and celebrated writer-director-actress Lena Dunham, female leaders in science and technology also made the cut among the "artists and leaders . . . pioneers, titans and icons."

Familiar tech faces Marissa Mayer, Yahoo CEO, and Sheryl Sandberg, Facebook COO, are listed as pioneers and titans, respectively. Both are powerful leaders in Silicon Valley, with the Yahoo chief leading the company back to its former tech glory, and with her new book, Lean In, Sheryl is reexamining gender politics in the workplace as they relate to keeping women from balancing the career success and family home life.

The C-suite isn't the only representation of women in the sciences, though; read on to learn about women revolutionizing education, helping to eradicate AIDS and breast cancer, and connecting remote locations to the power of the web.

Sex or Smartphone: Which Could You Go Without For a Week?

Smartphones are a ubiquitous accessory, even for those who don't consider themselves "techies," but have Americans adopted them so fiercely that they'd choose the app-filled minicomputers over sex for a week?

Smartphones are a ubiquitous accessory, even for those who don't consider themselves "techies," but have Americans adopted them so fiercely that they'd choose the app-filled minicomputers over sex for a week? A recent survey by Sachs Media Group showed that a majority of female respondents ages 18-34 would be more willing to go without sex than a smartphone.

Men of the same age group, however, would not only give up their iPhone- or Android-powered life for seven days, but also alcohol and caffeine, before going without sex. From driving directions to staying in touch to even making cat photo collages, there's a lot we rely on our phones to do for us, but we're wondering what other gadget geeks think.

How to Light Paint in 5 Steps

Light painting, the night photography technique where streaks of light and color somehow move through a still picture, results in the coolest photographs on the web, and it doesn't take years of professional experience to master.

Light painting, the night photography technique where streaks of light and color somehow move through a still picture, results in the coolest photographs on the web, and it doesn't take years of professional experience to master. On a recent photography excursion with Sony, I light painted with the company's camera experts and learned it's nowhere near as intimidating as first thought — plus, it offers the excuse for fun nighttime Spring/Summer practice sessions! Learn to create messages, drawings, or whatever inspiration may strike with these five steps to light painting like a pro.

The following suggestions are best used when light painting with multiple people: one (or several) to control the light sources and another to work the camera. Use a shutter remote to control the camera if working as a one-woman photography unit.

  • Set up a tripod — Light painting calls for long exposure times, which can cause slight unwanted shakiness (and not of the light paint streak variety) in the camera when held by hand. Set up a tripod like the Vista Explorer 60-inch tripod ($25). If a tripod isn't an option in your photography adventure, substitute another stable surface like the ground or a nearby table.
  • Pick your light options — We used sparklers (which you'll want to be very careful with) and glowsticks in our Sony-sponsored light painting session, but you can look to practical light sources as well including flashlights, flashlight apps, or LED light-up keychains.
  • Shoot in the darkness — If you're inside light painting, get to a dark room and make it even darker. When outside, get as far from street lights and cars as possible. Those "painting" the light should wear dark colors to limit their appearance in the picture, unless that's what you want.

Get to camera and shutter specifics after the jump.

All Catching Fire Internet Finds Now Lead to The Hunger Games Explorer

We know a thing about taking movie/TV show fandom seriously; you want to hear what other fans love about the same characters and need instant access to the latest news or trailers. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire doesn't hit theaters until Nov. 22, but fans are already reblogging, starring, and analyzing every piece of news and picture taken from the set. Today, everything social media has to offer on the world of Panem has been centralized in one interactive online hub, The Hunger Games Explorer.

A partnership between Lionsgate, the studio behind the dystopian film series, and Internet Explorer, the HTML5-powered site pulls in global fan content from social networks Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, YouTube, Tumblr, and even Google+. Official updates from the studio like cast photos and videos will make their world debut first on The Hunger Games Explorer.

The HTML5 interface was designed specifically to work with the touch screen of Windows 8 hybrid computers on Internet Explorer 10 — you can swipe through tweets and tap to like a new GIF or to comment on a YouTube video — though the site will work just fine on all other computing platforms as well.

Look for official content uploaded weekly to the site, which starts now with the latest Catching Fire trailer premiering online in conjunction with its first view at the MTV Movie Awards.

Pinning Feature Now in Bing Image Search

Because taking the time to move your cursor up to the "Pin It" browser plug-in button gets in the way of a rapid-fire pinning session, a Pin to Pinterest function is now available on Bing image search.

Because taking the time to move your cursor up to the "Pin It" browser plug-in button gets in the way of a rapid-fire pinning session, a Pin to Pinterest function is now available on Bing image search. It's as basic as searching for a photo, whether it's of a new laptop bag, Spring vegetable recipes, or vacation inspiration.

Once the images populate, click on the desired photo, where it'll appear as a pop-up with a Pin It button in the lower right-hand corner of the page. When adding to a Pinterest board, Bing fills in the name of the item with the original online source noted. Expect your pin count to go way up.

Facebook Home: A New Social Experience For Android

Today, Facebook Home is live on the Google Play store.

Today, Facebook Home is live on the Google Play store. Introduced by the social network last week, Home, is a new mobile system focused on the social experience. Like the social network's updated News Feed, Facebook's new not-quite-an-app, not-quite-an-operating-system Android experience, takes on a more visual design that puts content first (like being in full-screen mode on your browser).

The new mobile look is "deeply personal" and designed to help smartphone users stay connected with friends and family. Facebook Home is essentially a set of Facebook apps that takes over your phone. It feels like system software, not just an app that's running on your mobile device.

Facebook Home is compatible with the HTC One X, Samsung Galaxy S III, Samsung Galaxy Note II, and the yet-to-be-released HTC One, and Samsung Galaxy S4. Before you download Facebook's new social software, take a look at Facebook Home's standout features and let us know what you think of the social network's new way to share and connect on mobile.

Facebook Home will also be available on HTC First ($100) on AT&T, the first Facebook Home-optimized phone.

Benedict and Martin Return to Set on Sherlock Season 3

Season three of Sherlock is up and running!

Season three of Sherlock is up and running! After recently confirming the show will return for a fourth season, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, in Sherlock and Watson gear, respectively, have hit the streets of London to film episodes for the new season.

This week, we also learned the title of season three's second episode: "The Sign of Three," likely based on the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle original story The Sign of Four, the case in which Watson meets his future wife, Mary Morstan. The first episode in the series, "The Empty Hearse," is thought to be a take on Doyle's The Empty House, which details the detective's return from the dead.

Producer Sue Vertue took to the web to beg fans who spot the crew out filming on location not to reveal/tweet/Instagram/Vine/all of the above any plot spoilers or specifics on the production's daily location. No show spoilers in the following gallery from the first week of London filming, other than, yes, that is an iPad Benedict is carrying to set, and we'll speculate the other device is a Kindle of some kind. Proceed to the Sherlock extravaganza!
