YouTube Gets a Fresh New Look

Many have often lamented about the confusing and unfocused look of the YouTube homepage, but now users will be greeted with a brand new homepage that focuses more on what you like, and less on what you don't.

Many have often lamented about the confusing and unfocused look of the YouTube homepage, but now users will be greeted with a brand new homepage that focuses more on what you like, and less on what you don't. The entire page has gotten a sleek makeover, much in the way of Google+, which makes videos easier to find.

The left-hand side of the homepage will now be your hub for your subscriptions, connections, and where you'll find the trending and popular videos of the day, along with the various categories to browse through (like music, entertainment, etc.). The center of the page will feature your subscription feeds and recommended videos.

Channels have also gotten an upgrade, allowing YouTubers to customize what is featured on their channel pages with templates, showing off playlists, featured videos, latest videos, and more. Plus, you can now see a channel's feeds, which includes anything the creator has uploaded, liked, favorited, or commented on, and perform keyword searches on specific channels.

Get a better look at what the new homepage holds in the demo video from Google after the jump.

Google+ Adds YouTube Integration

Google finally rolled out YouTube integration to Google+ today, allowing users to search and watch videos without leaving the Google+ platform. You'll notice the new YouTube branded tab on the right side of your Google+ homescreen, which, when selected, brings up a search bar for you to enter your query. Once you enter a search, a video player pops up with a playlist of videos related to your keywords. From there, you can move the player around, even close your Google+ page and still watch and stream the videos from the resizable window.

It's a simple function, and one that will be welcomed by video addicts who don't want to open another tab to get a quick fix.

YouTube Adds In-Site Video Editor

New options now exist for editing videos of your favorite feline friend on YouTube.

New options now exist for editing videos of your favorite feline friend on YouTube. The website just introduced an
in-browser editor for previously uploaded videos.

The service is intended for quick fixes to videos already on the site and not as a general video editing tool. It allows the user to make changes to a video without the hassle of uploading new content or losing pageviews and comments. Rotate a video, stabilize shaky footage, adjust brightness and color levels, and add basic lens effects, like lomo or comic book. In traditional YouTube/Google form, the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button provides one-click overall color correction. Should you not like the edits, just revert back to the video's original uploaded settings.

Popular videos beware. Unfortunately, this feature is only available for videos with less than 1,000 views. Follow the break for YouTube's video introduction to in-site editing.

YouTube Music Gives You Playlists, Recommended Tunes

While YouTube may be your go-to destination for funny cat videos, it's also a top spot to hear music.

While YouTube may be your go-to destination for funny cat videos, it's also a top spot to hear music. And since music is so popular on the video-streaming site, it's now launched YouTube Music, an online destination for trending music and videos with recommended and artist-curated playlists and lists of upcoming live shows in your area. You can also find the current YouTube 100 list, which shows you which artists are the most popular on the site right now. The Red Hot Chili Peppers kicked things off with its quintessential rock-and-roll playlist — check out its recommendations in the video.

Music recommendation services are blowing up all over the Internet right now. Learn about a few more online destinations to get music recommendations and curated playlists below!

  • Spotify — Spotify is new to US users, but music lovers in the UK have been enjoying the music streaming and discovery platform for a while. Spotify allows you to find and stream your favorite tunes online, connect with other friends via Facebook to see what they're listening to, and discover new music through curated playlists from icons like Pitchfork.
  • Digster — This playlist service comes from the music aficionados at Universal Music Group and works alongside Spotify to bring you playlists and mixes for long road trips, bad moods, or impromptu dance parties. It's free and even pairs up with your free Spotify subscription.
  • 8tracks — Taking the radio online, 8tracks users spend painstaking hours crafting mixes for your listening pleasure. You can also legally share your own mixes of eight handpicked songs for others to enjoy.
  • Rdio — Rdio is like a mashup of Amazon's cloud storage and Spotify: you can store your music online and discover new tunes from friends who are also using the service.
  • Pandora — The O.G. music streaming and discovery service, Pandora, lets you choose a song to kick things off. It then pumps your speakers full of similar songs you know and love or even ones you've never heard of.
  • Magnifier — Though not a streaming service, Google has launched a Google Music Beta blog called Magnifier to help you discover new music by giving free tracks to download into your storage locker.
