As the first female engineer at Google, Marissa Mayer has always been prominent in the press and a public advocate for professional women, which is why the whole Internet is abuzz with her new role as Yahoo! CEO. Although she's just 37, it seems that she has already been racking up a lifetime of achievements. Here are some cool facts about everyone's favorite girlie geek:

  • Growing up, she was always accomplished. Back in high school, she was on the debate team, dance team, and math club and was the president of the Spanish club. She also played piano and babysat.
  • She got accepted to all 10 of the colleges she applied to. She picked Stanford.
  • She was an overachiever in college, too. Her extracurricular activities included dancing in her university ballet's Nutcracker, volunteering at children's hospitals, and teaching in her junior year.
  • She loves high fashion. Designer Oscar de la Renta once told Vogue that Mayer is one of his biggest customers, and she once paid $60,000 to have lunch with him.

What to Know About Marissa Mayer, Yahoo's Next CEO

Marissa Mayer, a Google leader for 13 years, will be Yahoo's next CEO — joining the small group of female chiefs in Silicon Valley.

Marissa Mayer, a Google leader for 13 years, will be Yahoo's next CEO — joining the small group of female chiefs in Silicon Valley. As the company's 20th employee, Marissa was Google's first female engineer. She was responsible for the clean look of Google's popular products: the simple white search homepage, Gmail, Google News, and Google Images.

A leader for women in the technology industry, Marissa told The New York Times that Yahoo was "one of the best brands of the Internet." Even more exciting? Marissa and husband Zachary Bogue are expecting their first child — she's currently six months pregnant with a baby boy!

Not familiar with the newly appointed CEO? Learn more about the woman who'll be leading an Internet legend below:

  1. She bought her first computer in college, where she was studying to be a pediatric neurosurgeon, then switched to a unique mix of courses only offered at Stanford: symbolic systems — a blend of psychology, linguistics, philosophy, and computer science.
  2. Following her 14 job offers after graduation, Marissa created a matrix, ranking each position on salary, location, chance of success, lifestyle, career trajectory, and happiness. She then recruited an economist to help her analyze her data and spent hours charting pros and cons with her friend before deciding which offer to accept.

Plan Summer Itineraries With a Time Traveler

Ready for Summer travels is the recently released Yahoo!

Ready for Summer travels is the recently released Yahoo! TimeTraveler, a free app that offers guided tours in 29 different cities, including London, New York, San Francisco, and Paris, among others. I tried out the app on cities I have lived in (Amsterdam, San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York City, and Dallas), so I feel like I have a firm idea of major landmarks every tourist should hit. The app itself is easy and intuitive to use; however, I see it more as a supplement to travel itineraries. It needs some major updates before I'd be willing to trust it to plan my itinerary entirely.

TimeTraveler Pros:

  • The app generates a list of attractions to see in a certain time frame. However, unwanted attractions can be removed with a swipe of the finger, and the app will generate a refreshed list of sights.
  • For each city, the app shows an interactive map highlighting the destinations on the itinerary (and in which order they will be visited). The map also pins nearby attractions and restaurants.
  • All the basic information for each attraction is right there in one place. The app pulls travel details, hours of operation, photos, and a brief description and history of each destination.

Watch the Royal Wedding Live on Yahoo's Official Site

The upcoming royal wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton already has some geeky touches, but now you have a second source to go to if you want to pull an all-nighter and watch the wedding live.

The upcoming royal wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton already has some geeky touches, but now you have a second source to go to if you want to pull an all-nighter and watch the wedding live.

Besides watching on the official wedding website, Yahoo announced its own royal wedding website this morning, which will be updated regularly with breaking news, photo galleries, videos, a guestbook, and, of course, a live stream of the nuptials on April 29. Maybe you should plan a royal wedding-themed sleepover with your pals?

Which Search Engine Do You Use Most?

Unsurprisingly, Google takes top honors when it comes to search popularity, capturing 65 percent of the US search market. But now, Microsoft's Bing has moved into the number two spot, passing Yahoo as the second most popular search engine with a 14 percent share in the market, according to recent Nielsen figures.

While Google is generally the default search engine in many browsers and mobile phones, Bing is quickly gaining ground; recently, the Samsung Fascinate shipped with Bing as its default browser, and rumors were flying that all Verizon phones would be coming with Bing as the default engine (the rumor has since been dispelled). I much prefer using Bing for travel-related searches and also for image searches but tend to use Google for everything else. What about you — which search engine do you use most?

Is Yahoo's Latest Update Competing With Google Buzz?

According to sources, Yahoo is poised to announce a new way to view Facebook content on its websites.

According to sources, Yahoo is poised to announce a new way to view Facebook content on its websites. The service will allow users to post their actions from Yahoo sites like Flickr onto their Facebook page and have their Facebook newsfeed delivered to their homepage or email, among other features to better integrate the social networking site with Yahoo's content.

Additionally, the company plans to rename Yahoo Profile pages — pages allowing users to create profiles managing their online identity and activities — to Yahoo Pulse, while adding additional privacy controls. Sources close to Yahoo say these changes will be rolled out over the next few days. Is this Yahoo's answer to Google's Buzz? Or is it just another way for users to share Facebook content they find relevant or interesting — similar to Facebook's "Like" button?

Yahoo! Unveils the Widget Channel For Televisions

I'm not really a stickler for needing to know what the weather is doing outside at all times.

I'm not really a stickler for needing to know what the weather is doing outside at all times. But for those who are (mom and dad listen-up), Yahoo! has designed a Widget Engine that allows TV viewers to access a wide range of information, all from the convenience of their TV screen. During CES last week, Yahoo! showcased the weather widget on a Sharp widget-enabled television. As you can see, a full weather forecast is conveniently displayed to the left of your screen.

These new TV Widgets will allow users to do things like interact with friends, track their stocks or favorite sports teams, or check out the latest news headlines. The Widget Channel was created by Yahoo! and Intel and can work on televisions as well as LCD TV/DVD combinations.
