How would you feel if your beloved email service turned into a social-networking site? The the New York Times reports that companies like Google and Yahoo are hoping to turn their email systems into personalized homepage services (like iGoogle and MyYahoo). Yahoo is currently testing a monitoring system that will detect the strength of your relationship to someone by how often you email or IM them. Yahoo has also mentioned extending your display info in a "profile page" format, which receives minifeeds similar to Facebook and can tell you when your friends' birthdays are. This sounds really beneficial and simple — almost like the mail provider does the guesswork for you — but will undoubtedly be met with some skepticism. What do you think of the idea?
