The Week in Geek

Jan 16 2010 - 4:00am

It was a slow news week for gadgets after last week's CES [1], but there were still plenty of geeky stories of interest. From Google threatening to pull out of China completely to NBC's late-night TV drama, breaking news stories kept me on my toes. The Golden Globes Go Geeky

Award season is upon us! This year, the Golden Globes got a geeky makeover [4]. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association and NBC have been gearing up for the big show by streaming events on Facebook and Ustream to bring you retrospective recaps of all the award-show goodness you can handle, and have also partnered with Digg and Mashable for daily updates and countdowns. And don't forget to catch Sunday's live broadcast.

Did you catch the first episode of Lifetime's new season of Project Runway? This season features a great geeky addition! [7] Usually the designers are clinging to their notebooks and paper sketches for ideas and inspiration, but with the help of HP's Touchsmart swiveling screen, the new batch of recruits can easily alter their designs on the fly, and add a new layer of sophistication by transforming the notebook into a portable and powerful digital sketchpad.

He's a Droid, I'm an iPhone

My guy bought a new Droid, and thus began a gadget competition [8] between the two of us. Check out which phone had the best GPS when we used them on a recent road trip.

Verizon Drops the Cost of Voice Plans

Let the calling plan price wars begin! Verizon Wireless has dropped the prices [9] on its National Talk, and National Talk and Text plans by about $30 each. Existing customers can switch to these new rate plans without penalties or contract extensions.
