Is It Crazy That Suri Cruise Has Gone Tech With Personal iPad?

Suri Cruise is an "it" girl so is it any surprise that she's also well-connected? The 4-year-old daughter of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes, famous for wearing the hottest designer high heels, kept busy with her personal iPad ($500-$830) while dining out recently. Like many of her peers, the child was taken with an art application. Parents are fans of iPads because the gadget's large screen makes for good reading, and there are a myriad of educational, creative, and entertaining apps to keep kiddos occupied. Lots of moms hand their iPhones over for their youngsters to play with or spend a few hundred dollars on a portable DVD player or iPod — is this any different?

I don't have kids, but I did have a computer in my house years before friends did, I had a cell phone years before kids at school, a laptop, and now I have the iPad. I turned out fine, it's balancing act and Big deal, for them the cost is about the same as those electronic games you buy for kids at Wal-mart, So why not?

I completely agree Kelly! I think children needs to be children for as long as possible. With so much technology they are growing up so fast, and missing out on so much. My sister and I never got into computers or video games in the early 90s and even when we got one we hardly used it. We had to rely on ourself for having fun, like climbing trees, made up games, riding bikes, barbies, stuff like that. I can understand using a phone while in public to calm a kid down, but not as her own! Plus, they are setting a very high standard for her.

i would let my daughter use mine to keep her occupied when out, but not her own. at two my daughter knows how to flip throw the pictures on the iphone. she's watched caillou on it during church, but i would never buy her, her very own. even if i had the money.

No, I'm sorry, this is ludicrous. I get that you have the money to give your child all the things she needs, which of course is a great thing, but giving your child all she wants is a whole other thing. If you want to completely ruin your child, then this is obviously the way to go, with designer clothes and the latest technology. Children need to be learned the value of money, even if money has not much value to them. I compare myself to other people my age who are continuously spending their money on completely useless crap and I thank my parents for having taught me to spend my money wisely. I already have been spoiled a tad too much in my childhood as a result of being the youngest of the family by nearly a decade, so I know that I could have turned out like one of those spoiled brats you see on MTV had I gotten every stuffed animal and toy I whined about as a kid. That being said, I know Suri's life is a little different (and a lot more eventful) than mine, but I don't think it's right to let your child grow up with the idea that iPads are some kind of toy. Call me old-fashioned, but what about a puzzle, a book or a little chalkboard to occupy your child?

well her parents obviously can afford an ipad for their daughter so why shouldn't they get her one? the only reason i don't have one is that i can't afford it; if i had the money id be rushing to buy one!

I don't blame them for getting her an iPad. They have some very kid-friendly aps (even some where she can draw, etc). They travel/fly frequently, and it's a perfect plane-friendly all-in-one entertainment system. If my son traveled as much as Suri, I'd spend the $500, and I'm not worth hundreds of millions of dollars. I think she gets plenty of human interaction, and I've never seen a picture of her playing with it around town/at a park. If they let her use it in moderation and she didn't throw a tantrum to get it, then what's the problem? There are many wealthy kids who are exposed to those less fortunate and turn-out to be giving and appreciative human beings, just like there are some less-fortunate people who think everything revolves around them and are spoiled brats. Just because kids are given expensive things, doesn't make them less appreciative.

I am a MASSIVE geek, and though I wanted a cell-phone from the time I was six years old, I didn't have one until I was almost twenty two! Even when I was a Freshman in highscool and saw my peers lugging around cellphones, I thought it was absurd. I just don't think that preteens and under need to be carrying around cellphones, laptops, or well, iPads. Especially not freaking toddlers! Like I said, I'm a major geek, and I come from a family of geeks, but even my mom limited my time spent with my Nintendo as a child. I think the only kind of tech a child should be sporting is a Nintendo DSi (music, camera, games, even a little web browsing!). It's cheap (in comparison to an iPad). It's portable. There's not a whole lot of risk involved with it being a method to contact strangers. It also is *designed* to be used and abused by little hands to some extent. And even still, I don't think a kid under 10 should have one of those. And even then, if they are under 16 or so, the parents should be moderating how much time they spend on it. Kids should be playing, learning face-to-face social skills (they will learn internet ones when they hit puberty and decide to skulk around on the internet), and seeing the world around them. Not stuffed in gadgetry.

I think that if it belong to the parent and they just happen to have some kid friendly apps on there then it's no big deal, but if you're buying it solely for a child then that is a bit too much.

anything i can put off until they are older; i do. they are little for such a short period of time. i think its nice to create without technology. but honestly, this is probably the least of the kids worries.

My 4 year old plays on the computer, and he plays with my Droid if we're at a restaurant and he gets antsy. You should see some of my kids problem solving and visual spacial skills! Everything he does is closely monitored, and in moderation.

Honestly if I were in their income bracket and had a kid I would give an iPad to them. I think with proper supervision it can be a great tool to educate so long as its used in moderation (like anything) and the child is also getting stimuli from face to face interactions and physical play

i thought of getting my son a ipad but i decided to hold off on it until they make more/better apps for tots and Thomas shows. I'm also worried about whether the gadget will have a very negative effect on his eyes.

If we could afford an ipad for each of our kids, I'd love one! So much cleaner than paper and crayons. A great teaching tool and something to keep them occupied. I'm not one to let my kids have a lot of tech time or tv time, I'm a firm believer in creative play and playing outside, but there are times when these things are the best option! Just wish we could afford them. Neither my husband or myself have one, nor do we have ebook devices or blackberrys or cells with call display or voice mail. Somethings would be lovely, but aren't necessary
