High-Res Home Video: See Sony's 4K Camcorder From All Angles

Jan 8 2014 - 9:14am

Are you ready for ultra high-resolution home video? Because vacation videos and school plays are about to go 4K. Sony's Handycam FDR-AX100 [1] ($2000) is a new 4K handheld camcorder with a very affordable price tag — and it's the first of its kind.

The AX100, which debuted at CES 2014 [2] this week, is much smaller and much lighter than its predecessor, the FDR-AX1. The previous generation cost over $2500 more ($4500) and weighed a hefty 5.38 pounds vs. the new AX100's 3.5 pounds.

The new model is the first 4K Handycam with a 14.2MP 1-inch CMOS sensor that can capture ultra HD images (3840 x 2160 pixels). Sony, however, reassures us that the sensor still allows for "beautiful bokeh background defocusing effects, even in low light conditions." It can record video at either 24 or 30 frames per second and captures stills at 20 MP. The Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar lens has 12 times optical zoom capability, and you can view all of your recordings back on a 3.5-inch LCD display. Built-in WiFi and NFC connectivity means that playback can also be viewed on a smart, connected TV.

Spring 2014 is the Handycam FDR-AX100's targeted ship date, and you can preorder the camcorders now at Sony.com [3]. Get up close with the video recorder in the gallery, then let us know: will you be capturing your next vacation in 4K?
