I was watching an old episode of Seinfeld the other day (it was "The Pool Guy" episode), and I couldn't help but LOL when George went off on Jerry for introducing Elaine to his girlfriend Susan. If you haven't seen the episode, George gets mad because he doesn't want his "worlds colliding". . . meaning that if his relationship self meets his independent self, it will be the end of independent George (you can check out the clip below).
Anyway, this got me thinking about social networking sites like Facebook, where many people keep their work contacts separated from their friends and therefore, decrease the chances of their "worlds colliding." What do you think about this? Do you keep some sort of separation among your various worlds?

i personally never put anything on facebook or whatever that i wouldn't be ok with my mom or my boss seeing. i just don't think the internet is for my deeper and darker of secrets. so i don't worry too much about worlds colliding. i have had clients (i do hair) make friends with me as well as just regular friends from my past/present and the occasional family member. i just keep the info and pics safe so i never have to worry about the colliding worlds - plus i'm not totally nutso like george!
1I am careful - I don't want someone to Google my name and find my facebook account, or my myspace - I'd prefer them to find my webdesign site than either of those two. But I do add old workmates and that kind of thing as friends.
2I am careful on the internet, I try to stay true to my offline nature. But, my offline nature is to keep my groups of friend seperately.
3I have everyone separated on FB and block various groups from seeing various things. Gotta love the privacy options.
I do not have my facebook setup to be searchable in google. Work peeps and friend peeps can collide on the wall, but that's about it.
I have coworkers as friends (we all work from home so it's our 'water cooler' spot) and am amazed at how many have our bosses as friends. Not me. I won't touch that with a 10 foot pole.
4I know I can't blog about certain things and broadcast it on Facebook - knowing that old HS classmates could see it. Or even my BFF on occasion. It stinks. Facebook is such that they prevent (I still can't get around their name rules) businesses from having a FB and not a person. I never wanted my real name online - but oh well. Then one day, this person with a name I didn't know asked to be my friend. That approval opened up a pandora's box. She wasn't that name, well, she changed her name at marriage. A classmate I never liked.
I wasn't even going to use FB after I signed up until 2 people I used to know found me.
Le Sigh!
5Yeah, I haven't figured out the privacy stuff. I'm not the best geek. I'm not that great with newer things, and I consider FB new still.
What really gets me messed up is the new S-Cable when my computer outputs to the TV screen but disappears from my laptop screen....Befuzzlement on where to look and sometimes even that I can't use the remote.
Sigh!
6I tried at first to keep facebook work-free, but I work for a small company so it was hard to deny requests when they started coming in. I did create a list to keep them from seeing the link to my blog, but I'm still careful about putting any information on my blog that I wouldn't want work or my mom to read!
7I definitely try and keep my facebook for friends only. Not that I have anything up there that I'd get fired for.. but I still wouldn't want my boss into my personal business like that!
8Wanting to keep your worlds from colliding doesn't necessarily mean you are doing anything wrong on the internet or airing your dirty laundry. I have a personal blog and a work blog. There is nothing horrible on the personal blog (or my Facebook), I don't want people that I'm helping on my work blog to know that I'm a big dork. Just because I'm a dork doesn't mean I don't know my stuff
9I'm with macgirl... I keep my work & personal lives completely separate because I just don't like to mix them. I'm not trying to hide anything, I just go to work to work.
10Sort of, but not on facebook or any websites (at least not that I can think of). I mostly just wanted to comment because I LOVE THAT CLIP. A George divided against itself cannot stand!
11i actually deactivtaed my facebook becuase it was becoming too much.
