The whole purpose behind building the Plastiki was to draw awareness to our dependance on plastic, and what it's doing to our oceans. Right now, there's a large collection of plastics and garbage floating in the Pacific ocean — called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch — and it's getting bigger by the day, since nearly 50% of all plastic waste ends up in the ocean.
