Would You Deposit Checks Without the Bank?

While it's not quite as bad as standing in line at the DMV, standing in line at the bank is one of life's necessities that I could stand to lose.

A new online banking company, CheckFree Corp., is making that a reality by offering a service where you can scan your checks at home and make electronic deposits to your checking account.

"Remote Deposit Capture," which is being used by bigger banks for big companies, may be made available to us very soon. I already love the perks of what online banks now offer, so I know that I would deposit checks from home in a heartbeat! What about you?

That's how the military bank USAA does it since they don't have any actual bricks and mortar locations (that I know of). I don't have a problem with it, less time wasted at the bank, in my opinion.

i just mail mine in as well or deposit at the ATM on campus. I haven't been to my bank in 2 years.

yes I would aslong as there is no hold on the money. I think all companies should have direct deposit for their employees.

I think it's a neat idea...but I already just deposit my cheques in my ATM whihc usually takes like 5 minutes tops.

I had never heard of scanning deposits before. Sounds efficient, but I don't know how easily it will catch on around here (Oklahoma) as I still run into people afraid to deposit their checks in at the ATM.

Hmmm on the fence about this one. I mean I rarely have to worry about this so going out to the bank (down the street) isn't THAT much of a hassle.

i wouldn't trust this yet. i think that it would be so easy to scam the system. when i got to the Drive up ATM at BoA, they have this new technology (ok - it's been at least 6 months) that you don't need a deposit envelope - but you slide the check into the machine and it scans it and shows you what you're depositing. i think that this way is more safe

I usually just use the drive-through ATM, although my husband's bank already offers scanned check deposits.

I'm a little undecided on this, but that's how I get with new technology. Once it gets more into the mainstream, I'm sure I'd get comfortable with it. Although it wouldn't be that much more convenient for me, since I actually use the credit union at my workplace.

I've always just used the ATM for dropping off checks. Or the check drop-off thingy for those banks that don't let you drop checks with the ATM. I'd use this if it was available to me, though. I already do most of my banking online.

I rarely have to go in, thanks to direct deposit, but if I have a check to cash, I always go in. I wouldn't do the scanning from home thing, even though I do use online banking for checking my account and paying bills. I wouldn't do it even if it did save me time, but on the rare occasion that I actually go in to the bank (only a few times a year), I almost never have to wait more than 2-5 minutes, and often am able to walk right up to a teller.

I will NOT take scammers and hackers long to figure out the security running on this mess. I would rather use the bank instead. I have direct deposit because of my job. But if I had to go in for whatever reason, then I would. I may be irritated by standing in line 5 minutes to long, BUT better safe than sorry. I'll keep going to the bank for now IF something goes wrong with my direct deposit from work.If this is safe in the beginning then it won't be for too long.

I would love to do this! The only reason I wouldn't at this exact moment in time is because I work at the same place I bank, and it just can't get any more convenient for me to get to the bank. I have never heard of people doing this before though. It would make MY job a lot easier! :)

I have been doing the scan your check thing for a few months and its great. I usually have everything else direct deposit, I haven't been in a branch in years.

My credit union lets me enter check info online and mail in the check. My money is available immediately. I never deposit in person or even using an ATM anymore.

i already do this as my bank has no actual branches. it's quite convenient.
