Blockbuster has shuttered over 1,000 retail stores across the US since 2010, in favor of human-less video rental kiosks called "Blockbuster Express."

Successor: Streaming Media — even Netflix threatened to do away with its DVD-by-mail service or at least sanction it off as a different company to focus on its on-demand Internet streaming media offerings. TV streaming boxes like Roku and Apple TV have only increased the prevalence of online streaming over physical rentals.
