Geek 5: All the News You Need to Know

Mar 10 2012 - 6:26am

Apple may have dominated headlines this week with the introduction of a new iPad, but other important events went down in the news as well. Catch up with everything you may have missed in this week's recap!

Introducing Google Play

Google rolled out Google Play [1] this week, which wirelessly syncs and stores all of the music, movies, apps, and ebooks that you buy from the Android market, Google Music, and the Google eBookstore across numerous devices. The Android Market, Google Music, and Google eBookstore will become part of Google Play, changing their app names to the Google Play Store, Google Play Music, Google Play Books, and Google Play Movies.

The New iPad

Apple held one of their trademark events Wednesday, and we saw not only the introduction of a new Apple TV, but also the main attraction, of course: the new iPad. We have every last nugget of information you need to know [2] on whether you should purchase the device or skip it, and just what makes it better than the iPad 2. And no, it's not the iPad 3, it's the iPad.

The Magical Lytro Camera

For those looking for a new twist on photography, allow me to introduce you to the Lytro camera [3] ($400–$500). This pocket-friendly camera allows you to capture images and refocus your pictures later.

International Women's Day

We celebrated International Women's Day this week and paid respect to five women who left their mark on modern life through science [4].

Ralph McQuarrie, artist, and the first person hired by George Lucas to conceptualize the Star Wars universe, passed away this weekend at age 82. Ralph also created the concept art for other famous adventure films, including Back to the Future, Raiders of the Lost Ark, and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. See a few of his most memorable Star Wars paintings brought to life in this gallery [5].
