Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy Announce Breakup Via Twitter

Earlier today, Jim Carrey and Jenny McCarthy confirmed that they have split via their Twitter accounts. Traditionally, celeb breakups are usually confirmed via a statement from a publicist, or an interview, but Twitter? I understand it could be the easiest way to get the news out and handle the situation personally, but I'm a little conflicted as to if this would be considered Twitter TMI.

Now that they've both made their statements — Jim wishing her the best, and Jenny saying he'll always be her leading man — I do have some tips about getting their digital lives in order (it can be tough to change your status from "In a Relationship" to "Single" for the first time in years). How do you feel about celebs making breakup announcements on Twitter?

It is sad that they broke up, I thought they made a good couple. As for this whole Twitter thing, I think it is getting out of control way too much.

I think it's great, personally. Much better than having some sterilized form-letter statement from their publicists. The whole appeal of celebrities on Twitter is that you see their "real" selves (why you feel annoyed/"betrayed" if you find out it's their assistant tweeting), so for them to handle it this way I think shows respect to their fans and to each other, since they did it in such an amicable way.

How classy. I guess, from their point of view, it's better than having the tabloids all over them. They get it out of the way and there's no calling of publicists, no paparazzi hanging outside the house to ask questions. I'd never do it, but it's not like I have to deal with the same things they do.
