Japan Earthquake Takes Down Gundam? [Updated]

One of my favorite memories about my trip to Japan during the Tokyo Game Show a few years ago was visiting the Gundam statue. Unfortunately, it seems that not only was the tip of the Tokyo Tower bent during yesterday's 9.0 earthquake, but the country's anime monument may have been destroyed. Anyone else have pictures? Send them in.

Update: The image on the right looks to be a fake. Here's to hoping Gundam is still standing somewhere.

im hoping that they can rebuild it. Or even make a real one that moves just like the anime series. Just a thought if Japan really want to get down and dirty they could build a prototype of the real mccoy and see if it would be sweet if they could. Hey Japan if you are listen America is triple dareing you to build the real one that can do major damage.

As someone who lives in northern Japan, shouldn't you be trying to help with the crisis instead of whining about it on the internet? Just a thought.

Hi Anon, by no means is this post intended to take away from the severity of the situation in Japan. We at GeekSugar are all painfully aware of how this destructive event will change lives forever. As you may or may not be aware, we've reported on the Gundam statue previously and posted this for informational purposes, not to make light of the recent events. My thoughts go out to you, your friends, family, and fellow residents of Japan.

As someone who LIVES in Northen Japan, I am slightly appalled that this (fake or not) is considered news. Homes, businesses and livelihoods have been destroyed. People have died. You're kidding yourself thinking that the fallen Gundam statue or the bent Tokyo Tower is important. Get real.

There are different angles around the statue that don't have buildings, but you're right on this one Anon — the image is a fake (see update above)!

That picture is obviously fake. The entire crowd is looking at where the body should be and not at the huge lump of gundam on their right hand side. The buildings that should be in the background are also missing. This is a picture from the statues first location back in 2009.
