When I was first learning how to use the computer my grandmother would constantly lecture me about the importance of typing fast. It's a skill that most of us take for granted nowadays - primarily because we type so much we don't pay attention to speed and also because computer use and typing is an integral part of most people's early education. Still, many employers ask for your "words per minute" (or "wpm" for short) score when you are looking for a new job. If you're wondering what your score is, take a free typing test. If you're not satisfied with the results, heed the tips below. read more
- Graze over the keys, don't tap. The more force you use, the longer your fingers will rest on each key. To type faster use minimal force.
- Focus on typing fast, but don't rush - you'll just make mistakes. You can focus on accuracy by spelling words out while you type.
- Keyboard and monitor positioning is key. Your wrist, elbows and keyboard should be on the same horizontal plane and at a 90-degree angle to your upper arms.
- The top of your screen should be near eye level. Do not set your monitor too high, or too low. It will cause neck problems.
Want to type faster but hate linear tests? Try a couple games that boost your typing speed.

Marks and Spencer
I only got a 81. I don't even know if that's good or not? LOL
1That's pretty good glam sugar!
2one of my favorite computer games when i was a kid was Mario Teaches Typing. one of my fav mario games! but i'll tell you what the thing that made my typing speed super fast was when Instant Messanger first became popular.
3dang i got a 44 thats bad right?
4I got a 29, not good.
5Hay cattattack... ditto for me! I'm on a laptop, though - not a proper keyboard... does that meke a difference
668 here - I don't dig typing things that I have to copy. I always get ahead of myself and feel like my fingers can't catch up
7I got a 71- I've always been a fast typer only I always correct my mistakes as I go, which I'm told you're supposed to do after you've typed something. So while I'm not the fastest, I always get 100% on my accuracy.
8those words are complicated to type!
9Mine ranged a lot. It varied between 80, and 115. It usually rested around late 80, early 90 though. w00t for keeping a shoebox over my hands in 3rd grade when we learned typing!
10i hit an 82 and then an 88...i guess playing piano kind of helped out in ways i never expected lol
11I think I actually type faster when I'm typing an email etc rather than typing those weird phrases. LOL!
12I got 35.
13Hmmm, between 63 and 71... I did it however with my laptop in my lap trying to type around my baby bump
I'll have to try that again when I'm properly seated with a real keyboard.
I think typing is a really important skill. Nothing drives me crazier than when I'm in an office and someone is sitting on the computer doing the hunt and peck thing.
1454. The best thing about middle school was typing class.
1598.
)
16I thought I was doing okay until I saw everyone else's numbers!
LOL I got a 72.
17Me too, ArtChiqe. I got a 66 sitting here slouching on the couch with the computer on my lap. Dang, you guys have skills.
18I got a 90. I think that's pretty good.
Thank goodness for my typing class in high school. Thanks to my typing class I can type without looking at the keys. I felt bad for my brother though because by the time he went to high school they no longer offered that class. Typing class is essential.
I hope other middle schools/high schools will continue to offer it.
19I got a 78!
20eh.. 73. good enough for me!
2188!
22blast! i only got a 73 but i went back and made sure everything was accurate. am i supposed to be doing that? plus, whats with the mix of caps and lowercase? heh. i usually use lowercase - much faster!
2355
24gah, i only got 71... i want to be a faster typer -__-
25averaged around 90, and that's on my old mac keyboard with its sticky keys (gotta get me one of those new sleek ones!
26I gots an 85!
27i need to learn how to type without looking at my keyboard lol
28138 wpm...but whether or not that means anything is questionable. My work (code, yay) would probably be more about what you're typing rather than how fast you're typing...unless your typing is slowing that down.
2971 but I always stop to correct the mistakes.
30I always knew I typed crazy fast. 138 wpm without error=Woot!
31velvetavalon - i used the same game!! i loved it and thought i was the only one who ever heard of it! i guess i have to get back and start using it again bc i only got a 64
32Aw man! I wanna have a 138 wpm like silentstorm and nikolem2!
What's your secret guys?
33Whoa. 107. I would've gone faster if I was on my usual keyboard, too. (I'm on a work computer with a stupid Dell keyboard. Clacky-clacky for the win?)
3486.. not bad..
35Got 41...but how do you know if thats good or not??
36126, w00t w00t! Thanks, touch-type teacher from 4th grade whose name I've forgotten.
3774, I guess I might type faster in Spanish, my mother tongue though... uhmmm
3895! in high school, my highest was 127 and i was easily the fastest in the class, finishing everything early and screwing around. one of my jobs is actually being a receptionist, and everyone is amazed at my typing skills. i can type while turned slightly to talk to someone behind me. it's easy to type fast if you envision what you're about to type/say.
39I am scared to try seeing all of those huge numbers that you others have gotten. I am getting nervous and correcting mistakes while I type this. It's been a while since I sat and typed for a test though so I am going to warm up and give it a go.
4084 on my second try.
41my first was 91.
90! And I had no idea before, so that's cool.
I've been around computers my whole life, so I type really fast by now.
4271...and good thing there is spell check, because I made a ton of mistakes!!
randijeanw - I had to type with a box over my hands in elementary school too!
43Still on 75! When I was in highschool (sometime in the 90s), we were required to learn typing with the old style typewriters. I appreciated that class so much since I pretty much learned how to type fast back then.
44@millarci - get a job involving lots of typing (e.g. computer programming
), and also spend a LOT of time on IRC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IRC, think multi-person chat before AOL/MSN/Yahoo came along) talking to people. If you're helping someone else, or you're just talking to friends
this way, you'd have an incentive to type more.
In fact, I think IRC is why I can type that fast, because when there's a bunch of people that need to be helped..or there's a fiery argument going on..it helps to type fast. Otherwise things would take forever to do
4560 is about average for an office job.
i remember being the best typer in a typing class in 6th grade and the teacher always said, "you'll be able to make good money one day with that skill."
LOL! Don't even worry about typing faster, seriously. if you have 70+ that's enough for emailing and leaving sugar comments.
i can type about 115wpm and everyone just complains that i type loud.
46I took a computer class in school where we had to use typing aids. Those didn't help me. I think accurate and fast typing comes from time. The more you type the better you will become.
47thnx for the tips and for the test site :3
48I am so so so bad in typing
this is really funny. in holland we don't get typing lessons at school, but i guess people learn it with windows live messenger!!
49I really think it depends on what you are typing. My score varied, with the lowest being 83, and the highest 133.
