How Long Have You Had Your Computer?

I was cruising through TeamSugar's Technology and Gadgets channel this weekend and I happened upon nitronat's post about her parent's computer and the never-ending Mac or PC debate.

nitronat wondered how many years should a computer last you, because her parents have had their HP desktop for about three years.

While I probably upgrade more often than most people, I think the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" rule applies when it comes to buying a new computer, especially if you only use it sparingly. Any thoughts?

I've had my mac G4 desktop for about four to five years. I recently got a Mac book pro for less than a year. I still love them both! My G4 is still running strong. It's just a little on the slow side.

Less than a year for my mac book, but that is cuz I spilled on my old one :PMy desktop I've had for about three years but I don't use it as often so it is fine.

I've had my Gateway laptop for about five years, and bought it refurbished. I don't play video games or anything, but I am writing articles and doing research for my doctoral dissertation using only this computer, so I have no urge to change! (I did add on some memory, and very carefully back everything up at mozy.com and onto my Zen every other day - just in case!)

I've had my laptop for about 10 months(the previous one i had for 3 yrs)and my desktop is a year and a half old and it's replacing the one i had for 7 yrs.....

ClassicDiva it probably had a tiny bit to do with it being so old as well. The PowerBook 1400 is missing so many of the standard ports that both PC's and Mac's have in common these days. This is the perfect example of why not to go with the "it's still working" theory. You probably had a really hard time finding any printers that would be compatible due to you not having any modern standard ports or even a current operating system that would be compatible if you did find a printer you could print to... This would probably be the case if you had a PC that was 11 years old as well. A computer year is like 25 human years.

My current computer is a little more than a year old. Before this one, I had a Powerbook 1400 from 1996 that my dad got from work when his company was getting rid of it for being so old. I used it all through undergrad, and the biggest problems I had with it weren't because it was old, but because it was a Mac on a PC campus. But we decided that when I went off to grad school it might be a good idea to leave the dinosaur behind. I don't really use it for anything, but I still have it. I am very fond of it.

I got my original computer in 2003. I've since put in a new motherboard and processor...new hard drive, a DVD burner and several other bits. The only part in it more than a year old currently is my modem.Its not that I think its needs to be done often adding hardware is something I find fun.

My laptop is 2 years, going on 3. I'm not in a hurry to replace it as it is purely an internet-surfin', occasional document-writin' and future note takin' computer. My desktop is almost 2 years old and I plan to replace it this winter as it is my gaming computer. 2 years old is ancient in that respect.

it's not really a matter of how long they can last as it is how long you can go with a computer that is slower / less advanced than the newer models. when i got my powerbook g4 in june 04 i gave my 2000 blueberry ibook to my aunt for her 2 kids to share for home school. and they still use it. there's not dvd burner and it's a little slow, but still running fine. i just put a new and bigger harddrive in my g4, i'm hoping it lasts a few more years.

thanks for all the info here - as geek sugar said I was wondering about this in one of my blog posts - This laptop is relatively new. My HP laptop died at about 2 years old. It all of a sudden started having a few problems and it would all be expensive to fix. Hopefully this one (my MacBook) will last for the next two years at least (to get me through college). Parents have had theirs for about 3 years but we had our old one for oh - a long time, but we had to update get a new one because it ended up being considerably behind times (we were using Windows 3.1 for the longest time). We got it when it was already old - given to us because the people who owned it got a new computer. But parents aren't hard on a computer so it's probably not going to break down on them but when it does they won't know what to do. Or what's happening. One just learned what a link was the other day. So I have to be the one that has to trouble shoot their problems (or send attachments for them!). So yeah...

My baby (Dell Inspiron, the computer of university students everywhere!) is a little over 2 years. Apart from one cd-drive change, and a dire need for an external harddrive come christmas she's still going strong, and hopefully will be for at least the final two years of my degree.
