Google Voice Porting Numbers

Will You Soon Be Able to Port Your Mobile Number to Google Voice?

For a short period of time last night, Google released the ability to port your mobile number to Google Voice for a mere $20. While the option has been removed, and Google released a statement saying that it may not be available to everyone due to testing, the idea that it may be widely released in the future is very exciting.

If you've ever dealt with porting your number from one provider to another, you'll know what this process is all about. But with Google Voice? What's up with that? Find out what porting your number to Google Voice will mean for you (along with a potential downside) after the break.

I love Google Voice because it allows me to have one number to rule all of my devices — mobile, home phone, work phone, etc. But now turning the tables, Google can port your mobile number (that you may be so fond of) into the cloud so you can take it anywhere. I used to have a really awesome cell number that I wished I could carry with me forever (this was before porting existed, obviously), and if you've had a similar feeling lately, you may be in luck soon.

The only downside? Since you're porting your number to the cloud, you'll be terminating your wireless service and will probably get charged an early termination fee if you're still on contract. So really, the only benefit seems to be that you can free your mobile number from the heavy chains of a wireless carrier.
