Have You Ever Been Dumped Over Email?

Google recently did a survey to find out email habits regarding love and lust, and well, since Valentine's Day is over, I was more curious about the attitudes toward breaking up over email. A whole third of the men surveyed said they thought it was fine to break up with someone over email, whereas a seventh of women said it was OK.

I'm surprised at how high both of those stats are and am still scandalized by the thought of breaking up with someone over the phone. But a phone dump is still better than an email dump, I'd say — so I want to know, have you ever dumped or been dumped over email?

I dated a girl for almost 5 years. We talked about getting married and last October she sent me a card saying she couldn't wait. Then in November she quit returning my phone calls. She told me she wanted to work on her life and also her daughters life and that her parents were in the hospital. That was all through a text message. Her daughter does not know her father and was calling me dad for 2 years. A month and a half later she sent me an email saying it was over. Her and I do not believe in cheating so I thought this so called Christian girl wasn't lying. At first I thought she was cheating on me but she didn't believe in that, so she said. Then I asked her and she said there was no one else. I tried to get back together with her a month later and she said no. I found out she was seeing someone else since November if not before. We had no problems and never had anything to argue about. I gave her and her daughter my world. Anyway she said she tried to call me and talk about it but I never got the call. Then up till last month I was getting restricted phone calls and I knew it was her and one of them she forgot to block the number. I sent her a text and told her that unless she had a change of heart she needs to stop calling. Instantly the calls stopped. Anyway long story short, it sucks to get dumped over and email especially when you were in a relationship for a long period of time. There is really no closure. It has been 9 or 10 months that have gone by and she is still on my mind when I wake up in the morning and before I go to bed and everywhere in between. I feel since there was no closure that it is harder to move on. There was no explanation.

I just got dumped by my partner of many years... on email. I'm sorry guys but it's cowardly, mean, and spineless to use email or text for this. If you are close enough to someone to have to formally break up, then it's the least you can do to just pick up the phone or talk in person and deal! Yeah it's uncomfortable but it's a few minutes out of your life so suck it up and be a MAN about it.

I was dumped from my best friend yesterday...We've known each other for over a decade I was sad until I read this post and woke up to myself. She's definately is not worth the heartache! So, I say yes, i agree, it's tacky, boorish & cowardly! lol

yeah..he was my first bf and he broke up with me via IM..and it wasnt a long time ago (I'm 17 xD)but i'm over him..n i remember i read that soemone wrote that its ok to break up that way coz its 21 century and just that its a new way of communication..i totally disagree..i mean u can discuss many things online but if u really care for the person, and if you are a person of character, u definitely wont break up with them trough IM/E-mail/txt or anything like that...

@looseseal...I am with you, i would prefer to be dumped via email rather than, face to face...who cares being dumped is being dumped, and I would rather find out without having to face the person. Especially when it is one of those instances that you know it is coming...my issue above was because the text message was out of the blue saw his name come up and got a smile on my face and then read the message, said "I just can't be involved with you anymore" it was a shock...turns out he was cheating on me anyway...

I haven't been dumped over email but my best friend was once dumped over a text message that said "I'm sorry and goodbye" !!!! Fortunately it was a guy she had only dated a few times and did not care for that much so it did not hurt her. But that message has become a private joke ever since ... :-)

@katiejane24 - I got dumped via a 5 minute call where he couldn't talk that long and then a 'follow-up' email. It truly hurt, but I agree with you 100% - "in retrospect, pretty much summed up the person he was (is): tacky, boorish, cowardly."It took me a while to get over it - I think because there was no closure on *my* end. But I think that's the point of doing it that way -- ditch and run.

I've dumped someone over email and I'd prefer to be dumped by email rather than in person.What can I say? I'm a 21st century gal all the way. I really don't get it when pearl-clutchers lament that the internet is making people "disconnected" just because it makes it possible to have less face-to-face time with people. All the implications that internet communication is somehow less "worthy". I'm sure some nay-sayers said the same thing when the new-fangled technological fad called the "telephone" became widely popular.It'd be great if other big things that people consider "proper" to do in person can come in email, too. Firings, notifications of death... (I can feel the force of a thousand panties wadding up, haha.) These are just the kinds of things where the pressure to say something back is really the last thing you need.And for those who thinks it's tacky and terrible that someone broke up with them over email... Isn't it just as well that the method of breakup delivery makes you think less of the dumper? Doesn't that make it less sad that the relationship is over?

I've dumped a guy over email, and felt this was the best way for me because he was wasting my time. In the course of a week and a half, it jumped from first date to co-habitation, and I needed to halt his rude behavior. He was rummaging through my kitchen cabinets without my permission. My current bf of a year and a half doesn't even go into my kitchen! This guy I dumped was intruding on my life and if I didn't break it off asap, we would have headed to the alter in 6 months.

Is it SO bad? Perhaps it's because most of my personal relationships are made over the internet (and our communication happens over the internet as well) that I feel that breaking up with someone via IM is just as good as over the phone. Possibly better? I understand that it takes a lot of balls to be able to break up with someone gently and in person, but then do you really want to be there when they do it? Does it make someone feel better to have their new ex there, watching them cry or get mad or basically just watching whatever happens?I think anything that could be said in person (or on the phone) could be said over IM as well. Emails let me think about exactly what I want to say in as much time as it takes. In the end I think it really depends on the relationship, the people in the relationship, why it's ending, and how it's worded but I'm just saying, sometimes email/IM isn't "incredibly tacky" and more preferable.However, breakup by txt is only "acceptable" if you're 11-14.
