Google Launching Two Chromebooks on June 15

At today's I/O keynote, Google announced two new Chromebooks coming from Samsung and Acer on June 15. These new laptops were born from last year's CR-48 beta edition, and have now evolved into consumer-ready machines with some nice cloud features.

Both Chromebooks boot in eight seconds, have built-in WiFi and are 3G-ready (from Verizon), feature automatic updates, and secure log-ins for multiple users. You can customize your Chrome experience with web apps, sync your bookmarks, and get your documents, photos, and settings on any computer thanks to its cloud-based operating system. I was hoping they'd be a little less expensive based on the fact that it's just a web browser and web app device. Great for students who store their papers and documents online though!

They seem more useful than an iPad, but a lot less useful than a full laptop, and about the same price. Nice for people with extra money, I guess.

Just to elaborate a bit more - SSDs are amazing. I love that it's Chrome's backbone. And I think the idea of a browser-based OS is an amazing and innovative idea. This is truly nothing but a consumption device, and that worries me. The inability to run professional apps alone means I would never, ever buy it. But, for the same masses that flock to an iPad, I think it's a highly compelling choice.

I don't have any use for this product. I have a Macbook Air, which I think is one of the finest products Apple has ever built. But, I think it's a GREAT direction for Google, and I'm really excited to see what they do with the space. We are truly entering the Post-PC world.
