Facebook To Add Location-Based Features

Location Sharing on Facebook: Way to Go or Going Too Far?

Foursquare, Yelp, Gowalla, Loopt . . . now Facebook will include users' locations in status updates and other posted content. According to the New York Times article, Facebook will announce the new technology at its annual developer conference in April. Apparently a team at Facebook has been working on the project for over a year, but it's been holding off on releasing any part of it until it's completely ready for widespread use. Since no real project details are available, any information is pure speculation. But could Facebook introduce something that's different from the location-based services already available? My guess is no — but we'll have to wait and see what it has up its sleeve.

In the meantime, do you think Facebook needs this functionality? Critics of location sharing are already starting to caution against potential dangers — will this make it worse?
