Celebrate Earth Hour Tonight by Turning the Lights Off

Earth Day is coming up, but before then I hope you're participating in Earth Hour, which takes place tonight at 8:30 p.m. until 9:30, no matter where you are or what time zone you're in. Earth Hour is an effort by the World Wildlife Foundation, and all you have to do to participate is to turn your lights off.

The goal is for 1 billion people to go dark, thereby "voting earth" and making an impact as a united planet.

So far, everyone is voting yes to turn out the lights, and if you care to make it geeky, Earth Hour encourages you to blog about it and tag it with earthhour or voteearth, and your location, or Twitter about it and add #earthhour or #voteearth and your #location in your update.

I'm sorry, I wasn't home to turn the lights out, I was playing tennis. I did, however, have them off all night while I was sleeping and all day today while I am at work. :P

I definitely believe in global climate change, but I think Earth Hour is self-indulgent and ridiculous. It's so very bourgeois and very akin to those kids who do "Displace Me." If you really care about global climate change, how about living more green every day?

@Esvienne, I know precisely how nonprofits work, and it doesn't change the fact that spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on promoting a worthless event when you're simultaneously laying a lot of people off is a crappy thing to do. They could easily have appealed to funders to reallocate some money for staff salaries (happens all the time), but they chose to waste their money on this instead.

I will participate in this. You can think this is a "scam" or whatever crap you want spewing out of your mouth, but after all you only talk and don't pull out the facts on how it is a scam. Think what you want but I assure you that you make yourself look like an idiot by just yelling, "SCAM". Thank you all who are participating and to those who aren't I hope you have good reasons why you aren't and hopefully you aren't one of those who spew out the "scam" crap.

Science? There are a great deal of scientists that disagree with the assumption of global warming and climate change as anthroprogenic, and it seems that they are not being given the platform; denied by the supporters of global warming in political discussions. That means that there is an intent to steer the argument outside of science and into a philosophical context through manipulation of truth. That is not science. What is worse, is that those that demand that the "consensus" of GW/CC as stated against mankind, is that they are hostlily stereotyping and overexagerating the character of those that are arguing the opposite. The pro-gw/cc crowd asserts that those that oppose the consensus are ones who drive down to the beach to dump oil on the ducks and fish. That is propogandistic tools and seriously erroneous behavior for a group that is supposedly arguing on the side of "science". Don't you think? And yes, I think it's absurd to shut the lights off for an hour. It doesn't save any energy as the power plants are producing the same amount of power whether or not you have turned off or left on the lights. So much for scientific thought. They missed this one.

It was proven that scientists were forced to prevent information leaks about global warming. I am huge into science and am constantly keeping up with the news... how do you know that global warming is a scam? Do you understand how the earth and climate work? Have you done your own research on the topic or just heard what random people have to say? Dig a little deeper, research on your own and spend time understanding the world you live in. It's people who think EVERYTHING is a scam that are making us fall deeper and deeper into the hole we're already digging. I am by no means an environmentalist to the 80th degree, but I do understand science. It doesn't lie.

I see where you're coming from, but at the same time if you understand how companies work, they have certain amounts of money that are allocated to marketing and events (and generally with the WWF it's alot of donations/fundraised money which can't be paid out for salaries) so I think people shouldn't boycott something just because the company had to lay people off. People will never understand how to move the world into a better direction unless there are grass roots movements such as this. Otherwise everyone can sit there and feel like they're doing something, when nothing gets done! It's not going to do you any harm to participate, but to each their own I guess

Absolutely not. Not only is it a hollow, meaningless gesture, WWF is spending hundreds of thousands of dollars promoting this event and having a big show at their headquarters here in DC - right after they announced a massive round of layoffs. (my friend works there... for now.) So while Carter et al are patting themselves on the backs (and continuing to pull down salaries >200K/annually) there are a lot of former employees who will be trying to figure out how they really are going to keep the lights ON.
