Do You Use Different Ringtones For Different People?

Just five minutes ago, I was happily typing away when someone's iPhone started ringing and I nearly had a heart attack. Why? Because the ringtone was the same I used on my iPhone when an ex-boyfriend called me. Even though the relationship wasn't super-serious and has long since ended, the simple ringtone was enough to give me a flash of anxiety.

The same thing happened last weekend when a friend's iPhone rang with the same ringtone — I actually made her change it! (See also: how to cut your ex out of your digital life).

While I may have overreacted a bit (I've since allowed my friend to change her ringtone back), I decided to adopt a one-ringtone-only policy, regardless of friends, family, or love interest status. What about you? And if you have a different solution, please leave it in the comments!

i prefer to have different ringtones for my caller groups. my parents have one, my siblings have one, my friends have one. it helps to know what to expect before stopping what i'm doing to check the caller id.

I have different ringtones for my close friends in my contact list. For all the rest, I have a generic (but cute) ringtone.

Everyone gets the standard "Robots"(Flight of the Conchords) ringtone...except my dad. He gets the Imperial March Theme...i die a little every time i hear that ringtone.

I have a different ringtone for my landline, my husband and son, everyone else gets the same.

I have the strum ringtone for family and the fiance and the standard rintone for everyone else. That way I know when to turn on my "phone voice" for work and other calls.

I actually use two -- the default hip-hop one (don't ask!) for any unknown callers, and my fave ring tone for those in my address book. Since I have a pay-as-you-go, I then don't have to answer the ones I don't know. Saves money.

I have the same ringtone ("classic phone") on my Blackberry for everyone except my Husband. His name is Caesar, so I have his set at the theme music to the TV show Rome. I've also had various Coldplay tones as his ringtone in the past ("Till Kingdome Come" was a longtime ringtone for him) but my 3yo Son now hears the Rome tone and knows "That's Dada!", so I think it's here to stay.

I used to but I would get tired of the same songs and then eventually I got tired of always changing the songs so, I don't anymore. But it's really convinient and I miss not knowing who's calling before I look at my phone. plus, I totally know how you feel about the ringer thing, gs. :)

I just want iPhones to start blocking calls! Or at least allow me to set the ring to silent. Grrr.

I used to use different ringtones for different people all the time. I made a few for some of my friends "Gay Fish" (from South Park) for my ex/good friend, "Closer" by NIN for my boyfriend (I have my reasons other than the ones you're probably thinking of for this one), "When I Grow Up" by Pussycat Dolls for my best friend, etc. But then I found out I can only have one ring tone for everything on my phone. I was horribly disappointed.

Dexaholic, that's adorable! Dogs are so smart. :)I just use one ringtone. Mostly because I'm too lazy to decide who should get what ringtone and then actually MAKE them. :P

There is only one circumstance when I use a different ringtone, and it's on my home phone (that I only have because someone else pays for it, otherwise I would just have my cell phone). I have a different ringtone set for when someone calls up to be let into my apartment. It's really funny too because my dog has learned to recognize the tone, and whenever it rings he runs to the door and sits there until the person comes in! It's pretty cute...

You need another option - "My phone is always on vibrate"I used to have ringtones for everyone I knew, but my phone is almost always on vibrate, so I have stopped using ringtones. It can be nice though - you can easily tell who is calling!
