Are You OK With Old Photos Showing Up on Facebook?

Putting this out there: I am not a fan of uploading and tagging "old school" images on Facebook. Before you call me cranky, hear me out. I'm not only friends with actual, real-life friends on Facebook, I'm also connected to co-workers and acquaintances with whom I'm not ready to share my bubblegum-pink prom dress or awful hairstyle choices from years past. If friends want to upload them for posterity, that's fine. But please don't tag them. Or at least, don't tag them without asking first.

How do you feel about photos from the past ending up on Facebook?

Sometimes, it all boils down to the intentions of the person doing the tagging. Others tag to embarrass. If you think an old picture will ruin somebody else's reputation or relationships, don't tag. I'm okay with tagging. If there's a bad picture, I just untag.

I don't think its that big a deal. You can change the setting of the albums so only certain people can see them and/or un-tag yourself, those sometimes the damage is done by the time you un-tag!

I am one of those who constantly preach to my family the really BAD reasons to tag a photo in the first place. First--people you know--you know--so what is the point of putting some-one's name there? Second--why give any stranger access to your face--that of your mother--and etc... Even when your profile is for "friends" only it can get hacked. Mine did. I am equally passionate about avoiding those silly "family tree" thingies. It just seems a recipe for disaster. What is the most common default security question? I bet that answer is on a tag somewhere. Just food for thought. Identity thieves are savvy people who know where to glean that information. Once you have been a target you become entirely well aware of the potential damage someone can do.

I have different settings for different photo albums, based on who I want to see what. The same goes for the tagged photos.

I adjusted the privacy level of my tagged pictures too. And I untag myself from pictures I don't approve of. I had someone put up pictures on FB of me drunk at a party from 10 years ago - I don't want my coworkers or kids to see those. Think about other people before you post that kind of stuff. I think it's rude, esp when people do it just to get comments.

I'm with @gigly_grl while I don't technically like them (it's my preference)... so if someone wants to tag me, I just get the notification, prevent other's from viewing it and remove the tag as soon as I'm notified. Simple as that. :) Don't know how the tagger sees it when I remove it, but hey... that should be a clear indication I don't want it there. :)

Too self indulgent, these social netwk. sites remind me of trying to get more signatures on your yearbk pgs in high school than others in your class. So dilusional.

Thanks for the tips! I think it is awkward when someone I haven't spoken with in ages all of sudden posts a childhood picture and tags it. It is just a little strange in my book!

I used to be bothered until a picture of me all bloated and swollen after giving birth to my daughter was posted up with her in the pic and now I just don't really care anymore. I figure I'm just being real and don't put too much thought into all that anymore.

I turned off tagging in my privacy settings, so when someone tags me I am notified but no one else has access to view those images. I figure if someone is able to view the person's page then they're within that group of friends/aquaintances and I'm fine with that but this prevents different groups (ie. family, coworkers, friends) from seeing photos that really have nothing to do with them.
