Do You Like Being Disconnected?

One of my best friends recently went on an exotic vacation to Guatemala and Belize and I was jealous for a variety of reasons. But mainly because she was totally out of reach. Her BlackBerry was barely functional, and most of the places she stayed had little or no electricity. Now I know that sounds like a nightmare for a geek and in general it would be, but I think about getting away from it all — no Internet, no email, no phone calls, and no TV, and I can feel myself start to decompress just thinking about it.

I think it's healthy for all of us to let go of everything once in a while, don't you? Or do you hate any disconnections from your gadgets?

i think i would die if i was disconnected. I MAY be able to disconnect from TV but internet...ooh no! when looking for a hotel, whether for work or for recreation, I make sure they have internet connection- GOOD INTERNET CONNECTION.

I've been disconnected from everything a few times, mainly because I travel a lot and there are just some places where you can't help but be out of reach - like islands in the middle of nowhere with no Internet and no cellphone signals. For a day or two it's fine, but it starts to feel lonely and I start wondering what the rest of the world is up to after that.

I totally feel the affects of being offline. it's odd. That's the one that's hard for me.

I wouldn't mind disconnecting, especially on an exotic vacation. I wouldn't want to be distracted by the internet or other people's problems if I was spending a wad of money on a serene getaway.

I actually love being disconnected. I can't stand talking on my phone, and Facebook is a stress machine. I could handle disconnect from everthing...except my iPod.

I'm ok with it if it is my choice. I recently went to St. Martin and for some reason I had no cell phone reception. That completely annoyed me. So I am ok with not being connected but I want it to be my decision.

Umm I like electricity :-) A LOT! I can go without tv, I never really watch it much anyway, but I do need the noise. Internet, I could do without for about 3 days, but by the 4th I'd be shaking. Cellphone? No fing way. Last year SO & I went on vacation. I didn't take my laptop, and worried that our phones wouldn't work much. We stayed at a cabin in the woods. What happened? ANS died! Biggest news in the gossip world that year and I was in a cabin in the woods with no tv or internet! Lol, by the time I got back home there were too many posts on the blogs to wade through.

Other: I would be really freaked out at first (I hate not being able to read my email) however by mid-week I might calm down and enjoy it.

NO WAY Jose. I NEED to be connected. Sure there are times when you HAVE TO put things away, like when working out, but I find that when you do try to disconnect you miss important stuff! No Thanks!

i like the choice to be disconnected - or to put simply, i like to be able to disconnect myself. when i go to the gym, i leave my phone in my bag so that nobody can reach me and i just have time to myself, but i still have peace of mind knowing that if somebody needs to reach me, they will in about an hour's time. i recently had to take a flight back home after visiting my parents who live across the country (a 5 hour flight) which was very delayed, and when i finally got back to my place, it was about 24 hours after i had left my parents' - only to discover that my internet was down! i was disconnected for a total of 3 days and it drove me nuts because there was nothing i could actually do about it.

While I don't like the idea of being completely cut off from the "rest of the world" (mostly because I have a husband overseas and a bestfriend who lives 6 hours away), I disconnect myself quite a bit. There are times when I will just sit down with a book and basically ignore the PC because I just want to relax and not think about the world at large. My cell phone is currently out of commission and other than my PC, I'm disconnected from basically everything. So when I step away for a day or so, it's a pretty big deal. My husband will still call me on my house phone, but to me that doesn't really count seeing as how he's my freakin' spouse, lol. But, getting away from "everything else", can be VERY good for me.

I loved Belize! We stayed on Key Caulker, which was kind-of like Gilligan's Island, only with empanadas. Yum! Being disconnected is part of the whole "getting away from it all" experience.
