The iPad Playbook: Everything You Need to Know

Apr 2 2010 - 3:47am

Tomorrow is the big day — Apple is launching its first tablet, the iPad. Although we've been covering all the news for you over the past few months, it's possible that you may have missed some info. In order to answer any questions you may have, here is your ultimate iPad playbook — to help you decide if the iPad is right for you, and be ready to rock the second you break open the box.

The Basics

The iPad will go on sale Saturday, Apr. 3 at 9:00 a.m. at Apple Store locations and Best Buy retailers [1] nationwide.

The Models

The iPad comes in six different flavor combinations [2]: 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB WiFi only versions, as well as 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB WiFi+3G-enabled models. 3G coverage is sold separately through AT&T for $15 a month (256MB of data) and $30 for unlimited data.

Delays and Shortages

All new online orders of the iPad [3] will be shipped during the week of Apr. 12. The optional keyboard accessory for the iPad is still delayed [4], and has yet to receive a confirmed availability date.

iPad Apps

Your iPad will be able to run nearly all of the apps available to your iPod Touch and iPhones, with more on the way. The iPad app store is open [5] so you can check out what is offered now, but a batch of 1,350 brand-new apps [6] was recently uncovered, most of which are expected to go live on launch day.

iPad-Ready Websites

Although you won't be able to view your favorite shows on Hulu due to the lack of Flash support [7] (however, there is talk of them adopting a work-around [8]), there are thousands of sites that are ready to view [9] on the iPad tomorrow.

iBooks

Using the e-pub format of publishing, the iBookstore [10] has thousands of books ready for download now, with hundreds more added daily. Although the backlit LED screen is not the most desirable way to read a book, you can adjust the brightness, and even lock the iPad's accelerometer [11] so you can relax and read while lying down.

Virtual Walk-Through

Apple released a series of guided walk-throughs [12] so you can get a handle on how the iPad works, and be ready to roll when you get it home.

Cover It Up

Once you bring your new gadget home, you'll want to protect it with a chic case. Here's 15 that you may want to consider [13].

Carry It All

Although us ladies don't have a problem stashing our iPads in our bags, guys are in a more precarious position. Give in already and accept the man bag into your life [14].

Don't Want an iPad? It's OK!

If you aren't willing to shell out $500 for another Apple product to add to your collection, there are some alternatives [15] to consider.
