Why Canon's EOS M (and Other Mirrorless Cameras) May Replace Your DSLR

Gone are the days when only professionals used digital SLRs.

Gone are the days when only professionals used digital SLRs. With prices dropping and online tutorials galore, even we amateurs are feeling at ease with advanced gear. The downside of our newfound nearly pro status? DSLRs are bulky! Enter the Canon EOS M ($800; available in October).

The latest offering in the growing interchangeable lens and mirrorless camera market (Sony's NEX camera line is also a popular option), the EOS M features much of the same power of a DSLR in a compact, more travel-friendly size. Don't let that small size fool you, though; this camera packs an 18MP CMOS sensor and a mount adapter so that nearly any lens you may already have will fit on the EOS M.

Keep reading to learn why the Canon EOS M — and compact mirrorless cameras in general — will make your DSLR one lonely gadget.

Canon Announces Camera For Space Enthusiasts

If taking photos of the night sky is your idea of a good time, then listen up stargazers — Canon has released a camera just for you.

If taking photos of the night sky is your idea of a good time, then listen up stargazers — Canon has released a camera just for you. The Canon 20Da is optimized for taking pictures of space thanks to its high-tech infrared filter, low-noise sensor, and superior hydrogen-alpha sensitivity that allow photographers to capture nebulae and other cosmic goodies from the heavens.

The 20Da comes with an 18MP sensor, ISO speeds expandable to 12,800, and the included "Live View" feature allows you to stream what you're seeing in the camera to your TV with the included Stereo AV cable, perfect for education, or just sharing the astronomical love with a group of friends. With a price tag of $1,400, it's a bit hard on the pocketbook, but if you're on the market for a pro quality DSLR and happen to nerd out over space photos, this could be the camera for you.

New Camera Envy: Canon EOS 5D

Serious camera enthusiasts have a new toy: the high-end Canon EOS 5D Mark III DSLR Camera.

Serious camera enthusiasts have a new toy: the high-end Canon EOS 5D Mark III DSLR Camera. Canon promises strong image quality with the 22.3 MP CMOS full-frame sensor and low-light boosts with a standard ISO adjustable from 100 to 25,600 and extended ISO settings that reach 102,400; never fear a dim lighting situation again.

An inclusion in the camera that iPhone 4S users have grown accustomed to is the HDR function, a process that stitches together multiple exposure levels into one image. A dual memory card slot ensures you won't have to delete images to clear up space, while the 61-point autofocus system shows off the camera's state of the art technology.

With the capacity for longer video recording times — up to 29 minutes — and a built-in headphone jack to monitor audio, the EOS 5D is a videographer's dream. Available at the end of March for $3,500 not including lens, the EOS 5D is for professionals that use any sort of photography in their line of work. For the rest of us who are unlikely to shell out several thousand for a camera, we can look at the EOS 5D's release as sign that professional camera features will be trickling down to affordable consumer cameras soon.

Cool Capture: Ocean Beach, San Diego, From Aggiemsd

Ocean Beach (OB) is a sleepy little beach town in San Diego. When you enter into OB, you feel like you've entered a time warp to the late 60s, early 70s. Most of the shops along Newport Avenue are locally owned and managed, and when Starbucks came into town the locals picketed for months during the construction and after it opened. OB also hosts the longest pier in California, and perhaps the longest concrete pier in the world. I took these pictures with my Canon SD940is around 4:30 p.m.

Canon's New Point-and-Shoot Cameras Resemble DSLRs

I don't know what it is about a black, rugged, encasing, but I automatically think — DSLR!

I don't know what it is about a black, rugged, encasing, but I automatically think — DSLR! Canon has yet again dressed its PowerShot cameras to impress with new exteriors and advanced features like customizable shot settings.

The six new cameras from four different product lines are great for those who want something a little bit more advanced than their regular point and shoot, but aren't ready to make the leap to an expensive DSLR yet.

Take for instance this new 10 megapixel S90 that is tiny and compact, but boasts features from the PowerShot G-series camera line. The new cameras range in price from $249 — $499 and will hit store shelves in September and October.

Concept Cameras I Wish I Could Get My Hands On

I never shy away from concept products, because if there's one thing that is constantly changing and evolving, it's gadgets.

I never shy away from concept products, because if there's one thing that is constantly changing and evolving, it's gadgets. For instance, don't be surprised if you see these prototype cameras — which both serve a handy purpose — on the market one day soon. The first is the Triops Digital Camera by Franziska Faoro which features three fish-eye lens cameras that will conveniently capture every memorable moment — panoramic style, of course. The second is the Canon Snap by David Münscher that is so teeny and tiny, Twitter and Facebook junkies will be able to keep their profiles constantly updated with one single click! What are your thoughts on them?

Do You Buy Gadgets Because They Come With a Rebate?

Love a good deal?

Love a good deal? Canon has added a few amazing rebates on their DSLRs and lenses, and I automatically thought: I could use a new lens for my canon SLR.

Was I shopping for one? No, not really. But I can't turn down a good deal, and gadget rebates are a huge temptation, much like passing a department store with a huge sale sign.

The thing is, I love them when there's a rebate on something I was already planning to buy — it's like icing on the cake. But sometimes a rebate is all I need to get my credit card out (bad habit, I know). That said, I've never been shopping for a gadget and had my heart set on a brand when a fabulous rebate swayed me the other direction.

What about you? Do rebates sway you into a buying a certain brand or product?
