Books is a Free Download for Electronically Keeping Track of Your Library

Download of the Day: Books

Updated 10/06/08 7:26 PM · Posted by GeekSugar · 6 comments

I know my geeks are a literate lot, so I've dug up a new, free application for Macs to keep your analog books organized electronically. Where GoodReads is a great way to keep track of all books you've read, the download Books is your electronic library for all the books you own.

All you have to do is enter titles of the books you own, and Books will quickfill all the details of that book, including the cover art (once you've selected a quickfill metric in preferences). Once your book is entered, you can keep track of the most important thing about book ownership: the lending history! I'm always loaning my books out all over the place, so being able to keep track of them is going to be ultra useful. I've got to keep my shelves full, you know.

I know that this long list looks scary, but trust me, once you get the hang of it, it'll be a snap the second time around.

  1. First of all, join the Download of the Day group
  2. Click "Create and Share!" on the left hand side
  3. Choose "Blog"
  4. Give your photo a Title
  5. Leave the category as "general"
  6. Change the channel to "technology and gadgets"
  7. Add keyword(s) (for example mine for this photo was "Download of the Day")
  8. Click on the "Add Image" link below the "body" box
  9. A popup window will happen - click on "Browse" to find your image on your computer
  10. Once you have the image chosen, click "Submit"
  11. The popup will show you your image, choose size: "normal" - if you want, you can give it a title (which will show up as a caption)
  12. Click "Insert" and the popup will go away
  13. Your "body" box will now have some text in it. Leave it as is. If you want to add some text before the picture telling me why you love the download, do it before the code that has appeared.
  14. Click Submit

So join the Download of the Day group and share information about all your favorite downloads! Yours just might end up on the geeksugar homepage!

I wish there was something like this for windows, it would be a big help in keeping track of all the books I've read

Bisque, if you want to just keep track of things you've read (as opposed to books you own), I recommend GoodReads, that I linked to above. I love it.

I like using Amazon's Media Library. It feeds into their recommendation engine, so I get better recommendations. And, I can scan the bar code with my webcam, and it will grab the data based on that.
Thank you Geek! My husband and I have books literally everywhere in our house, and now our daughter is following in our addiction. Having a program like this will help us to avoid duplicates on older books, as well as keep track of everything. YAY!

Ooh, this looks great. I'm downloading it, though I can't do much with it since I'm at school and my books are all at home. :(

Um, I use LibraryThing (online site) to do this so that if my hard drive crashes I don't loose my database of books. It's free for up to 200 titles, and you can buy a barcode scanner for $15. It's fun and easy.
