If you use Facebook regularly, you've seen the new, redesigned home screen. What do you think? As with any redesign, I'm having some trouble getting used to the navigation. It seems like every time I finally master the home screen, they make a sweeping change.
After poking around the page on my own (after all, this isn't rocket science, right?), I decided to check out the Facebook blog to see if they offered any tips of their own for navigating the redesign. Turns out, they do! A Facebook engineer takes the time to explain the redesign, from the icons at the top of the screen to the links on the left side of the page. For an even faster tutorial (with easy to follow images), check out their Guide to Facebook's Home Page, which quickly and clearly explains the changes.
In what seems like a testament to our ever-shortening attention spans, one company is offering downsized versions of books for the Nook and Kindle. Instead of a full version, the books are between 1,000 and 2,000 words and cost about $2 each, kind of like a digital version of Cliff's Notes. Currently, the only titles being sold this way are business books geared toward professionals who may not have time (or the desire) to read the full version of a book.
But it raises an interesting point; what if more publishers sold shortened summaries or even partial books for a reduced price? While this model wouldn't work well for fiction or other books with plot development throughout, it could be a good model for reference books or college textbooks. It's reminiscent of the iTunes sales model; instead of buying the full album, buy a few songs; instead of a full book, buy only the chapters you need. What do you think?
Kids With Nannies Are Less Connected? Most moms are guilty of letting the boob tube babysit their kids once in a while. Screen time — be it in front of the television or computer — can give parents a much needed break to get stuff done and keeps children entertained. A recent study by a caregiving provider found that a nanny or babysitter's charges spent less time wired and more time outdoors, which makes sense since the person is hired to cater to the child.
Sure, Polaroid may be back but that doesn't mean that the nostalgia is over. The Snapshot Frames turn any picture into a magnetic Polaroid-style photo. The set of five 3 1/2" x 4" magnets is only $10; just slide your photo into the frame to turn it into a Polaroid.
These would make a cute Valentine's Day gift for your sweetie. They're much cooler than most of the geeky picture frames I've featured. The fact that they're magnets makes them even cooler and would be a sweet retro touch to your fridge.
Used to be that you could catch old episodes of The Tonight Show on NBC's website or head over to Hulu to get your funny fix online. But unfortunately, with Conan O'Brien's departure from the late-night talk show, NBC has decided to scrub Conan from both sites (Hulu is partially owned by NBC), leaving just a few crumbs behind. Gone are the links to The Tonight Show from NBC.com, and if you search The Tonight Show on Hulu, you'll find episodes of The Insider covering the recent shake up of hosts, but nothing of the show itself.
Jay Leno is set to take back The Tonight Show on Mar. 1, but I doubt that means NBC will also bring back the seven-month stock of Coco-fronted episodes when the show returns.
