Leading into the week, the tech world was buzzing whether Facebook would unveil a smartphone at its Android event. Catch up on the social network's big unveil, plus the cell phone's over-the-hill birthday and the first episode of our new show The Sync Up hosted by geek girl extraordinaire Veronica Belmont.
With its big, bold tiles and color-intensive interface, the Windows Phone OS sure has lots of style — but, unfortunately, it gets little love in the app department. Although the platform is still trailing behind iOS and Android offerings, there are some great hidden gems available for Windows Phone 8, like the beautiful photo app Camera 360 and Weave, an RSS reader available exclusively for Windows mobile. There's also a new crop of popular apps jumping on the Windows Phone wagon, namely Pandora (which has a special treat for WP users) and the multiplatform messaging app Viber.
The Windows Phone app store is still missing key downloads (ahem, Instagram), but Microsoft's new mobile platform is on the rise. If you're rocking a Nokia Lumia or HTC 8X, make sure you've got these 11 top-notch apps for Windows Phone 8.
Based on our level of excitement for Jurassic Park 3D, you'd think we hadn't already watched the film 23 times since its 1993 debut. Nothing can crush our love of dinosaurs, not even what happens when ancient animals come to life on a remote island. Rather than wishing for a real-life version, we'll opt for crafting a virtual dino park from the safety of an iPhone with the Jurassic Park Builder game (free, with in-app purchase options) for iOS.
The game's more SimCity than it is action-packed running-from-a-T-Rex thrills. Players are guided through the ins and outs of building a theme park on land or underwater with prehistoric attractions by the movie's stars John Hammond, Ian Malcolm (hello, Jeff Goldblum!), and Dr. Grant. Expand the park with new buildings and hotels, than take care of the dinosaurs well enough to add more to the menagerie — over 30 varieties in total.
As you progress, show off your creations with Facebook sharing, but whatever you do, don't share the plans with a character named Dennis Nedry!
