I can't seem to not feel guilty when I throw out a banana peel, let alone a cell phone — which is probably why I have six old cell phones hiding in my closet! Thankfully the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has just announced a cell-phone recycling program partnership with popular service providers, retailers, and device makers like LG Electronics, Motorola, Nokia, Samsung, and Sony Ericsson.

According to Inhabitant, the EPA is hoping that the 130 million cell phones that will be thrown away this year will be recycled or reborn through cell-phone donation. With multiple mail-in and drop-off opportunities, the goal is to eliminate the need to create entirely new phones and therefore reduce the amount of hazardous waste like copper, nickel, antimony, and zinc leaching into landfills. Find out how you can get involved in this program.

Great idea! I know cells can be so bad for the environment!
1That is so awesome, people go through cell phones so quickly they should be recycled!
2My mother swiped my old phone when I switched off the family plan because Sprint gave her a $50 credit to her account for every old cell phone she turned in. I think it was limited to cells from Sprint, but she held onto the phone until she had a month where she could use a little more loose cash (like Christmas) and turned it in then. I think its a great idea to recycle old cell phones!
3Hi,
4Better idea: go to http://cellphonesforsoldiers.com and print out the postage to mail your phones to them who recycle the phones and turn them into cash to buy phone cards for soldiers.
Some AT&T stores are authorized centers for this program check the website.
I've recycled old cell phones through a program at my work place, it really makes it so easy when you can just drop them in a bin and know that they're getting dealt with properly. I wish it was that easy to recycle old computers and other electronics too.
5Oh this is great. What's even better is donating the phone to Hopeline, which helps abused women. http://aboutus.vzw.com/communityservice/hopeLine.html
6There's also a new program I read about called "cell phones for soldiers" where you can return your old cell phones to an at&t store and they will send them to Iraq.

I'm all about recycling, but reusing them for a great cause is just as valuable!
Great idea! recycling mobile phones is a good option, if you have old unused phones throwing at home. Good choice
