Just when you think you've hit the jackpot and Santa finally pulled through this year by getting you your Playstation 3, you rip open the box to find a boring phone book, without a gaming console in sight.
This exact situation happened to a kid in Thousand Oaks, California where his PS3 was switched with a heavy phone book.
According to Engadget, the PS3 wasn't purchased on eBay or second-hand, but rather at the local EB Games, which makes this story even more shocking. The parents are just as stunned as their son and are trying to track down their PS3 as we speak. Talk about the worst Christmas ever! Let's just hope this hasn't happened to anyone else!

Back in my retail working days we had a lot of people try to return hard drives. They would just take their old hard drives and put it back in the box and return it. Nothing more embarassing then opening up the box and going, "I think you put the wrong hard drive in here" . I heard of some people buying Plasma TV's and there was nothing but rocks in the box.
1that's awful. that sort of happened to me when i was younger - when Discmans first came out. my mom got me one for hannukah, and when i opened it - the box had the stuffing but was empty
2OMG, that's horrible!
3Wow. Slow news day? I can't believe they actually sent a guy out for that, lol. Interview, sure. But a guy out at the "scene" live?? lol.
It's good for the family, though. They'll definitely believe them now. And even if they don't, they aren't going to refuse to replace it.
4Doesnt anyone check the box before they put it under the tree? make sure all the stuff is in there? Hell I check my order at take out places before I step my foot outside.
5Awwwww
6So sad
At first I thought the parents played a trick on their son (I could see my parents doing that to us when we were younger!) then I understood that they did not know that was in there. I didn't know that sort of stuff happened--how sad!
7That's what I thought too Happ! My mother still does it from time to time
8actually this did happen to me this christmas, my sister bought me a game at EB for my DS but inside it was empty. She said the guy at the store took it from behind the counter and it was new, so she did not even bother to check. But when I opened it I discovered that the plastic protection had been sliced and there was no game inside.
9Some of our Apple reseller friends were having this problem with new MacBook Pros shipped to them from Apple. The problems all tied back to a UPS hub. Pretty sneaky.
10wasn't there a situation in the past where eb sold guitar hero and there's no guitar hero in the box?
11That's awful.
Now I know why my mom always opens the box (if she can) to check before buying.
12I would have to maim someone over at EB Games.
13I always check inside the box before I hand over an expensive gift.
14I don't fluffyhelen - maybe I should! That's just plain awful. What a total bummer.
15I'm going to have to agree with Liz R.
16wow, that's really sad!
17ohmy gosh!!
18thats awful
poor kid.
I've heard that's been happening with iPods too. People open them to find a box full of rocks. What kind of a grinch would do that! Lame!
19at first I thought the parents had playeda cruel trick on the poor kid but after reading I was shocked.... I never open the box to check for stuff... guess I should before I start handing them off... thats awful... poor kid... now he will never have another 'big gift' look - instead he will probably have flashbacks each year of how he opened his ps3 and got a stinkin' phone book
20I usually like to see what I'm buying to make sure it's either there or in a good condition but I guess with something like that I wouldn't bother. I hope they give him a real one. Poor kid. People are so shady.
21EB Games should give the parents their money back AND give the kid his PS3.
22That's really bad.
23Poor kid.
24that sucks. Reminds me of that story where the girl got a slice of meat in her new ipod/iphone box.
25I thought his parents played a trick on him too! This is why I check everything I buy. Even if the box has that round seal sticker, I don't care, I still open it and check the contents. I've bought plates that were sealed tightly in the box. When I opened it, I noticed that instead of 6 dinner plates, I only had 4, to which one was cracked so bad that it wouldn't have made it to the table.
