With Nintendo Wiis being sold out across the country, people have been going to great lengths to get their hands on the hottest gaming console of '07. According to Kotaku, GameStop will be offering a Wii Certificate Program that runs for just one day, Friday Dec. 21.
Yes, this Friday, the Friday before Christmas, you'll be able to pay $250 to reserve a Wii for pick-up on Jan. 25. Not only that, but you'll have to go into a GameStop or EB Games store in person (in the US only) to make a reservation — Can you sense my sarcasm? And even if you wanted to buy two, they are only allowing one reservation per household.
I can't say I'm enthused about this rain-check method of shopping, but it's pure genius on GameStop's part: Desperate shoppers who are willing to do anything for a Wii. . . .Brilliant!
What do you think? Would you be willing to pay now, wait, and collect the goods later?

i'm willing to wait = )
1Not only am I willing to wait, I have waited and been rewarded! Last year when they first came out, I waited for over an hour and got one!
2One of my co-workers spent last Sunday night sleeping in the parking lot of a Toys 'R Us to get a Wii for her daughter.
I think I can wait until January!
3My mom called Costco and asked if they were getting any that day. They got 24 at that particular store and they sold out in less than 20 minutes. She was second in line and got one. She probably had to wait 1/2 hour.
4I no longer want one. I'd rather have a digi SLR camera!
I drove around Pittsburgh for 3 days in October to get my brother one. And for myself for christmas drove around.
I don't think that this is as bad as the rumor that Best Buy has been hording Wii's in their warehouse.
5after waiting overnight on a cold november night 2 years ago when the xbox 360's were first released...i'll never wait for anything again. i thought i dressed warm enough with two pairs of pants and took two blankets and a sleeping...and it was probably the coldest night of my life. really not worth it.
but to the wii... i work at best buy and the last two sundays that we've received wii's there were at least 15 people camping outside all night to get one. we even had a guy show up one morning around 5am while our guys were doing an ad set to see if we had gotten any...he stood at the door and knocked and creeped out the girl putting out movies in the front of the store.
6Unfortunately, I have to sell mine. Car trouble costs more than I have in savings.
7(and not to defend Best Buy but we aren't "hoarding" them... just some of the ones that we get are held for Sunday ads, so people know when they are going to be arriving, and we can guarantee that we will have some in stock...giving people a better chance of getting one.. our store got 22 today and they were put on the floor and sold within a half hour)
8Yesss. I want a Wii so badly
But I think I kind of want one before Jan 25. Plus I don't have
money until after Xmas. Dang!
9Something else= I already have one
10I wouldn't be willing to wait. Unless it was for the most special person ever. But I think people understand that it's really hard to get.
11I want one, but can't justify the $$$. Now if it was for an older child, I can see doing this pay now, get later, but not a younger one
12We went to Best Buy last weekend, in the cold, at 4am to try to get two Wii's. The line was too long for us to have gotten anything! They were for gifts, but if I wanted one, I'd definitely sign up and wait until Jan.
13Well I already have one.. but if I didn't I would definitely do this!
14I reserved a copy of GH3 at GameStop and had to wait a couple months to get my copy.. it was worth it because then I knew I definitely got a copy!
Only if that wait meant I got it for free.
15As much as I want one I'll just wait. I don't have the patience or the energy to wait in line. Sure if I happen to go into a store and they miraculously have one I'll buy it but I can hold off till after the new year.
16If I didn't have one and I'd be guaranteed 1 in a month, I'd do it. I'm just curious how they are going to be able to guarantee 1 to everyone that might sign up for that deal.
My hubby got one for me for my birthday this year (August), I was so shocked when I opened it. I asked him how on earth he managed to get one. He said he just drove to all the places in town and Wal-mart had 1 left. He knew that's what he was planning to get, but waited until the last minute to go look for one. He had no idea they were hard to get and just got lucky.
17Already have mine. Woo Zelda!
18I have mine already. Found someone on eBay in March who was not only reliable but also sold Wiis for only a few bucks more than store price.
19I can wait.
20this is not something, I have seen Australia have the issue with
21we got one not even a month ago and there was heaps
so am guessing this is mostly America
Been there, done that, wrote the manual. My little brother had to wait last year for several weeks to get his (It was a Christmas present and he didn't get it until late January-early February, I forget which). I say "he" was waiting but in all reality, our whole family was.
Frankly, it didn't really bother any of us that much. It sucked, but we all knew that's just how it was going to be when it was released. We've been playing games since the era when playing video games meant you were a virgin, a nerd, and an all around "loser", so we've seen this sort of thing many times before.
Honestly, I think the people who are whining that they can't get their hands on a Wii need slapped upside the head for waiting until after Black Friday to do their shopping. If you wanted to get your kid a Wii for Christmas this year, you should have had the brain capacity to buy it before everyone and their grandmother was paying more-than-the-damn-release-price for them.
I understand that some people didn't have the money or whatever, but I've noticed that it is the folks who DO have the cash and who are used to being able to get what-they-want-when-they-want-it that are throwing the most fits. Those are the people I want to hit with a stick and tell to STFU.
22And I wanted to note that my comment wasn't aimed at you Geek. Or any of the others around here, really. My frustration is mostly at the people I've seen on little newscasts around the web, "venting their frustration" at how they've been trying sooooo hard to get their kid a Wii since *gasp* THANKSGIVING and it's been "just awful" and "stressful".
I mean, it's a gaming system...you can live without it a few weeks, you know? And if you can't...then why have you waited for almost a year to buy one? >.>
23Zaya, each store is only selling X amount of reserve cards, so that's how they are dealing with that.
I might do it (debating if I want to fight the crowds on the Friday before Christmas) because I want to get my boyfriend one for Valentines Day (we decided it would be easier then than now). However, there is a thought lingering in the back of my head that this is just a ploy to get people in the store to buy something else. Otherwise it'd be an online offer too.
24matdredalia, I agree with you about people with money waiting until the last minute and throwing a fit. That is why I shopped for my brothers in October, and just simply went into the stores and just said "Wii?" and got the "no". Ok thank you. Eventually I got one.
I don't see how everyone is also comparing what game stop is doing to "standing in line waiting". You go in, buy your ticket and leave. And yes Duh they are trying to get you into the store to buy something else. Why do you think they are in business? To give games away? lol. Every store wants you to come in and buy.
25I want one so bad
26One of my friends is selling hsi fro $800 and it comes with everything pretty much and a couple of games, so we'll see.
I waited in line (outside in New England!) when they first came out, so this doesn't seem outrageous at all to me.
27This is why I got one in August, I knew things would get out of hand around Christmas.
But if I didn't have one I'd think about reserving one. I'm lucky, I didn't have to wait for my Wii or Guitar Hero 3 for Wii, I'm picking that up tonight.
28I just check craigslist. I bought one off there for my boyfriend for his B-day. It only costs like $40 more than MSRP, but I figure tax and the hassle of trying to get one made it well worth it.
29I already got mine too! My boyfriend just happened to be in a GameStop buying other video games when a shipment got delivered and he snatched one up right away.
30SkinnyMarie, I would not be surprised if people lined up to get one of the limited tickets, Duh.
Since there are a limited number of tickets, there could be 5 per store and they will have people in all day for those 5. When you get in the store they'll tell you they are gone, at that point they will try to sell. I'm not saying thats bad, I'm just giving my two cents.
31If I have.
32my brother's wanted a wii for so long - that i sent my mom this link so she could go and get it. for me - i would just wait but he's wanted it since it came out last year
33I have waited in line for a Wii!
My boyfriend and I went to Best Buy last weekend at MIDNIGHT and waited until 8 am to get 2! It was a long and cold night but I'm so happy we got them! I don't know if I'd ever want to sleep on the streets of LA again though! But at least I got one and don't have to pay those people who are selling them for $100-$200 above retail!
34i got one right after the launch...
35that's my last resort..wait. i knew i should've bought it before thanksgiving. *sigh*
36No way.
37My husband stood in line for the Wii when it was first release over a year ago. I'm really not understanding why the availability of the Wii has been so horrible for over a year. I have family that have wanted the Wii since we got ours. Every time I'm in a store that carries them I check and see if any are in stock.. I've only stumbled on some in stock once. I went to buy it but there were some unruly young thugs were waiting to buy them to most likely sell them for a quick profit on Craigslist.
38I have mine already. My bf was at gamestop in July and they got a shipment in and he snatched one up, I was a little mad at 1st cuz we had just moved like 2 weeks prior but now I am SO SO SO happy!! No way I would ever wait in line for one if I didn't have one.
39If I really wanted it I could wait until January - more holiday celebrating is always good!
40I would, but then I already have one.
41We've got one already and have just got one for my Dad for Christmas.. They are brilliant!
I live in the u.k and their out of stock everywhere but this office company Viking.. And they are just the Wii without the stupid mark up and buy with 3 games deal! We only ordered it yesterday and it arrived this morning so I'm really chuffed!
Can't believe Nintendo have done this again though.. It's all just clever marketing I sware.. there's no excuse that the product once again is out of stock a year since it's released! Besides in the UK (not sure if it's the same anywhere else) the PS3 are out selling it.. You just don't hear about it though cause they have the stock to cover the demand.
It is a great product and well worth the wait.. x
