TiVo is one of those luxuries that you simply can't live without once you've grown accustomed to it. If you don't like commercials but love TV it will make you feel like you've won the entertainment lottery. You can keep up with shows you like, ignore ads and boring scenes and spend less time looking for something to watch.
I hate to say there is a downfall to TiVo, but if there is one, it's the fact that the boxes are relatively cheap, but you have to pay a monthly service charge (it ranges from $12.95 a month to $299 for three years). Here's the good news: TiVo is offering a special for its current customers. For a limited time you can give a friend the gift of a TiVo HD with Lifetime Service. The deal comes with the TiVo DVR, a wireless adapter and a TiVo product Lifetime Service card. It costs about $700, but you'll be covered for a "lifetime." While pricey, it's honestly the best gift ever and is a great gift to yourself if you were thinking of upgrading.

My dad's an eager adopter and had tivo the moment it went on the market and he scooped up the lifetime deal back then and is still riding it now. Of course now he's GOT to have the HD lifetime, because regular tivo lifetime isn't worth it anymore. hehe.
1I've been eyeig to get a tivo for awhile now. If i got one this christmas i'd probably end up in front of the tv trying to catch up on all my beloved shows lol

3We got our Tivo HD with the lifetime service a few years ago. The biggest bummer is Direct TV upgraded and we had to "upgrade" to their Direct TV DVR or else we weren't going to get all the new HD channels. While they did the swap for free (or it might have been a very small fee, my hubby took care of it) the interface on the Direct TV DVR is horrible. I miss my Tivo with its happy little blip blip noises.

I'd have to read the fine print. Their $299/3year deal is only for THAT receiver - if you want to upgrade to a bigger one (say from 80g to 200g) then you'd have to start over. Which, if is the same case for lifetime, is BS - it should be lifetime as a CUSTOMER. Really "lifetime" means 3-5 years, probably. I'd stick with the $299 for 3 years if that is the case.
5I want Tivo! I have DirecTV, so I suppose I can just get DVR. There's an option for it. We'll see.
6I love my DVR; we just have the Time Warner version, but the Tivo sounds nice too. (This is working for me, so I'm not in any hurry to shell out for a Tivo right now.)
7Tivo is fantastic, but something better might come along and then it's all for naught.
8TiVo has a new TiVo HD with product lifetime bundle offer running through July 2, 2008. Like the last one this one is $698.99, but unlike the last one this one is open to *anyone* - not just current subscribers. So if you're new to TiVo and want to get in with lifetime, this is your chance. Oh, and they also toss in a little TiVo plus doll and the TiVo WiFi adapter.
