MSN recently did a reader poll about the Ten Biggest Web Annoyances (beyond the nagging problems such as e-mail spam, phishing lures, viruses, and spyware) that really got me thinking. The annoyances were categorized by an Annoyance Factor, as in the percentage of readers who were either very annoyed or infuriated by the issue. Predictably, dubious privacy policies ended up with an aggravation factor of 69 percent, beating out difficult online forms and the over commercialization of the web by a landslide. What bugs you the most?

This is going to sound LAME but anyway . . .
1I read a lot of blogs, I adore blogs. It's like reading diaries.
And when I post a comment I get that stupid letter number picture that you have to type in what you see. It irritates me so much!
I told you that it would sound Lame.
Haha, I hate those too, bugn!
I really, really, really hate when people TyP LiK dIs.
It makes me cry =[
2Pop ups. I cannot STAND them!
3I hate, hate, hate bad web design. I loathe websites that are difficult/ confusing to navigate, and ones with broken links and and hard to read type are also huge pet peeves.
I agree, purposefully misspelling or words like "prolly" make me want to go bash my head against a wall. Just thinking about it pisses me off.
4Actually there is standards for the web, http://www.w3.org/ . It's just alot of sites don't follow it.
51337 speak for sure, I mean why? It's understandable why people do it in text since characters are limited but on here you can type to your heart's content. Just do it.
And yeah pop-ups
Sooo rude. Annoying.
6Bad design is my #1 annoyance. Some people don't want to pay me to design something modern, functional and chic but they'll pay some guy who knows his cousin's friend $200 for some complete amateur looking "design" that's probably from a template in some cheap home computer web program.
I know that even if I find an item I really want, if the site is poorly designed and ugly I won't buy anything from them.
7My biggest web annoyance is that Hotmail changed to Windows Live & I hate it!
8pop ups!!!
9Pop-ups. Good god you would think having blockers would help, but nope.
10Spam mail. I get probably 20 emails a day about Viagra littered with poor spelling and grammar. I agree with glam sugar. I am a webdesigner. Poorly designed sites are not necessary.
11that is a really scary picture. mega lipliner, lady!
12n_i_k...i TOTALLY AGREE! I hate signing in now!
13Definitely the over commercialization of the net. The whole flashing ads, blinking ads, ads taking up every conceivable space on a page - Pop ups are the worst!!!! If I go to a site and they have pop ups or ads that you have to press "skip" well I skip their site altogether! I will purposely give my business to a website that has the least amount of annoying ads.
14My biggest web annoyance is adult cyber bullies. While the majority of cyber bullies are juveniles, I've encountered a lot of adult cyber bullies in the local forum I frequent. I'm often on the receiving end of a lot of rude language, nasty name calling, and lately threats.
In doing some research on the cyber bully phenomenon, I found this online article titled "The Psychology of Cyberspace." Definitely an enlightening read.

15I just wanna defend prolly. I sometimes use neo-words like that to help my text convey my tone. I want to type my speech the way it would sound if I spoke directly to you.
16More annoying than prolly and wanna are excessive use of emoticons and LOLs. But thankfully at least most people now know that posting in all caps is a big no-no.
I'm in the web development business myself, and let me just say, my biggest challenge in making a functional website for you all to enjoy is 1) Internet Explorer v6.0's lack of adherence to W3C rendering standards, and 2) The LARGE MULTITUDE of you that, for some reason, won't update your version of IE to 7.0, which is somewhat improved.. It has been out for OVER A YEAR! You have NO IDEA HOW MISERABLE YOU ALL MAKE ME EVERY DAY!!
17Wow, Nikko, that article is heavy but does seem interesting. I'm all about the psych so I'ma have to read it.
18Ooo, does "I'ma" fit into that head-bashing category as well?
19pop-ups/unders
20Yea, much like everyone else here I loathe pop-up ads.
211) Lack of W3C support in IE6. Microsoft helped develop the standards, stick with them. Ok, I know IE7 is a little better, but the general population hasn't made the switch.
2) Data mining from social networking sites. I guess this falls under dubious privacy policies.
22The new hotmail
Poor grammar and spelling. I speak the way I type. Who says "Prolly" I could pull out the pittsburgh "yinz" on you if you don't watch out!
23w3c's website is like impossible to figure out. They really should have hired a designer.
24I don't think the W3C's website is hard to figure out, there is just way too much text on the main page.
25We do say "prolly" down here. Lazy-tongued Southerners...
26And that is what I meant by figure out. My eyes can't read screens as it is, when there is too much jumbled text on a site I can't "figure it out"
27When things take a LONG time to load. Usually my computer is fast but some sites are way slooooower and it drives me NUTS!
28One of the best things about using Firefox as my browser is a plugin called Flashblock. It prevents Flash content or ads from loading unless I click on them. One of the greatest things since sliced bread.
29I'ma does, and hearing the word "prolly." What can I say, my mom is an English teacher, and when you get corrected for everything, you become extremely conscious of it. It's not my fault, it's hers!
And I agree, the new hotmail sucks. I got a mac account instead, and I'm never going back.
30Captcha codes can be killer. So annoying ¬_¬ The only good thing about them sometimes is if the website owner puts a funny little message like "I know you're not a robot but just in case you are.."
31I've been job hunting and that is now done online 100% across the board. The number of online forms to be filled out that take 20 minutes each that don't go anywhere when you finally finish it and hit 'Send' is mind-boggling. Not to mention a %$#@!% annoying waste of my time!
32I hate that I have to keep 3 browsers on my Mac and 2 versions of IE on my VM of XP to ensure I can navigate all pages on the web. LAME.
33Like the rest of you, bad spelling and 1337-speak annoy me, a lot - it's the worst when you see all sorts of spelling and grammatical errors on a site that is for business/professional purposes, though! To me, that is the equivalent of wearing wrinkled sweats to an important meeting or interview - yes, technically you're still the same person with the same skills, but poor presentation like that leads to a negative impression. But I digress.
Let's see, what else irks me? All the search engine optimization and paid listings that have made a lot of search engine results pages kind of useless or annoying - particularly when you are shopping or looking for product reviews. I guess I can't begrudge the SEO types for trying to game the system, but I can still be annoyed by it! At least there are people trying to fix this problem - it's been termed "search engine fatigue" (http://mashable.com/2007/10/31/3luxe/).
Also, spam and such irritates me, of course, but I've found that using gmail and Wordpress (Akismet anti-spam, yay!) for my blog cuts down on this problem a lot. Those captcha comment things sometimes bother me too, but that is more because it can be hard to discern what letters/numbers you need to type with some of them. They are kind of a necessary evil though.
Okay, clearly I have a lot to b*tch about...time to think happy thoughts! Time for me to head over to Cute Overload and look at adorable-ness.
34when you are registering on a new site (usually to buy something) and you pick a password that has already been taken the site erases the whole FREAKIN PAGE that you just soent 10 minutes filling out. after 3 max of this i will not pruchase anything/register with that site. AHHH!
35sound, sound on most sites obnoxious
36I love my Mozilla and will never willingly switch back to IE whether it be version 6 or 7. Considering there are several different web browsers out there ... sites should be able to be viewed in any of them. I will NOT go back to a site that forces me to use IE - except Windows Updates ... bastages.
37My ULTIMATE annoyance is the roll out ads that roll across what I am reading. I cannot even tell you how many times I have been reading a news story only to have an ad roll out across it and NOT shrink back. I am constantly having to revisit pages to read things. I hate it. Yahoo! is the worst by far.
My second is people using bad grammar. It just really bugs me. I get that sometimes there are typos and things like that, but people who use the wrong words to sound smarter and interchange your/you're too/to/two, etc. in forums.... ugh. It makes me want to reach into the screen and fix it!
