Last week comedian and new host of The Price is Right Drew Carey talked to Parade about his love for his iPhone and compared getting a new phone to sex. While I couldn't agree with him on that point, I did agree with him regarding his take on Bluetooth: It's uncomfortable. Or as Drew put it:
"I don’t have a Bluetooth thing on my ear. That bugs me. I got one when I got my phone. You put it in, and you look at yourself in the mirror. And you’re like, ‘Nope, not me. I’m not going to do it. I’m not wearing one of those stupid things in my ear.’"
I know plenty of stores sold fancy Bluetooth units on Black Friday and I recognize that it's probably the safest option for talking on your phone while driving, but I never use my headset. Am I alone on this one?

I think people who talk on Bluetooth headsets look like they're talking to themselves. It really freaks me out when I out and about and I see someone just talking to no one in particular.
1I have a Jawbone and a Jabra, but they're both too big for my ear. Hubby uses them.
2I have the Apple iPhone bluetooth headset. It's so small it doesn't look too weird.
3I have a bluetooth but I hate it and only use it once in a while.
4I hate these things with a passion. My grandparents both use them and not only do they scream into the thing but they always expect other people to know they are actually using them..you don't know how many times I have tried to talk back to them cause I thought they were talking to me..they wear it all the time. I'm surprised they don't wear it to bed. Cyborgs...is what people with bluetoothes are..The only time I think they should be used is while your driving in your car ALONE...but that is just me..
5It's not about whether or not you can see the big bulky earpiece, it's the fact that whenever you wear one - and use it - you look like you're talking to yourself. And that's very weird.
6I used to work for a cell phone company and I have been around Bluetooth for several years. Matter of fact a Motorola rep let me and one other employee try out on of the first versions. It was only compatible with the Motorola P270 model. That by the way was a great and durable Motorola phone. Anyways, the headset took a while to get used to but once you got adjusted to it, you couldn't live without it.
7The price at that time didn't work to well for consumers... I think it was $179.99 and was much bigger and bulkier than the versions we see now and you had to charge it like every two hours.
But through the years, I started seeing more and more versions and brands offering Bluetooth. For a while, it was even a required sale to the customers in order to get commission. Now its becoming even more of a trend and I see more and more people wearing them on the streets but still not so much in the car.
Anyways... I think Bluetooth is great and the key is to find one that fits you comfortably and works well with your phone. No one wants static or to be uncomfortable with it. A decent Bluetooth headset should run you around $69 and should be a brand made for your model phone. The generic versions or lesser quality types are very static-y and don't last very long.
I couldn't live without mine! I mainly use it in the car, cooking or when I'm on my computer. I've been through several models over the past 4 years and finally found a Flamingo. It's comfortable and doesn't wrap around your ear, or sit in your ear canal. I can even run with on. I'm amazed how many people buy those old, uncomfortable Motorola headsets.
8I had a bluetooth but I lost it lol. I'm not one of those weirdos who walks around in the mall using it because I'm too lazy to hold a phone. I hate that ... it looks like you're talking to yourself. And I absolutely HATE when people use bluetooth and they're HOLDING THEIR PHONE IN THEIR HAND! It kills the purpose altogether. But I only used mine in the car, on my computer, or in the privacy of my own bedroom when I'm watching TV and don't feel like holding the phone lol. Other than that, I'd just put my phone to my ear the old fashioned way...
9Those things look so ridiculous, I would never be caught dead wearing one! Like several people have said, the people who use them just look like psychos talking to themselves. I love the ones that use hand gestures and stuff while "speaking" to a wall, etc...
10I plan on getting one, a small chic one, to use in various situations. But I will NOT become one of those people who walk through stores talking on them. I mainly plan to use it when I'm driving or when I'm working on my computer and trying to talk to a client at the same time.
11i don't have one, but i want one. the only thing about it is it looks like you u r talkin to yourself.
12I use a bluetooth headset. I don't wear it when I go out though, I only use it when I'm cleaning or something. I think it looks ridiculous to wear around while not talking.
13I use mine in the car and if I am busy doing something with my hands. I don't walk around with the thing in my ear just waiting for a phone call.
14people here wear them like a fashion statement and talk in store on them. it's really awkward when someone next to you is talking and you don't see their earpiece and you have no clue why they are talking to you.
15i'd rather just not talk while i drive than wear one.
i 've only used it at work when i was sneaking a covo but yeah other wise i dont like them so much.
16I don't have one yet, but I will before next July when they outlaw driving while talking on the phone unless it's hands free. And I hate (HATE) people using it as a fashion accessory. Take the friggin' thing out when you're not using it, douche bag!
17My boyfriend leaves his in all the time, and it's really annoying. He uses it a lot for work, but still, at HOME I hate it. And on the weekends. It's too reminiscent of a hearing aid. I use one, and couldn't care less what people think of me for talking to myself.
18I only use it in the car as I too am prepping for the hands free law in July. I'm actually hoping to have a car with built in bluetooth by then. I don't wear it when I'm out walking around as I feel like a huge dork. I've had many models but my Apple one is my fav. It's tiny and doesn't wrap around my ear which is nice as it doesn't interfere with my sunglasses. That was actually something that kept me from using my previous versions.
19i definitely use it when i'm in the car...i hate it when i find that the person who just swerved into my lane was talking on a cell...why would i then do the same? but i wouldnt EVER be caught dead walking around with an earpiece....only in the car =)
20I talk to myself all the time. My therapist says there's nothing wrong with that.
21I've used before but not now I don't like it anymore
22We live near a military base, my bf actually works on it, and they STRICTLY enforce the no phone while driving law, so yeah, I have one. His last one charged with the same charger his phone did and that was great. My main problem is forgetting to charge it, so as soon as I put it in, it dies on me. Mine is comfortable, but does make my ear sore if I wear it all day.
23I have to admit, I like Star Trek and various other science fiction ventures. However, that does not mean that I want to look like a cyborg, which is what a bluetooth headset makes you look like. Not good.
24I have a Bluetooth headset. I hate it. But I also like talking on the phone during the commute. I use it because I can tell it makes a difference. I am thinking of just getting an old school wired one, for better clarity.
25People who walk around the city talking into those little headsets always make me think they're talking to themselves or me.
It's awkward.
26im so glad im not the only one who despises these things!! this girl wears hers during class (though it is a law school so i guess it's not surprising she feels that important). i too hate when i am in the grocery store and someone walks buy talking to themselves, or so i think, it is so akward. ugh hate hate hate!! that being said, if there is a no cell phone law sometime here in FL (no clue what's going on our governor is too busy with casinos right now)I might get one for the car ONLY!
27I do use a headset, but only at work! It means I can move around the office and not be tied to my desk. In my car I use a bluetooth that goes through my car stereo.
28I think if you are genuinely busy and doing things with your hands, It's actually useful. But all too many people buy into some image and use them constantly.
29I haven't tried it yet
30I hate them. I can understand how they can be useful for people who are using both hands but people think that means they can leave the thing in their ear all the time. I absolutely find it annoying when I see people with a bluetooth headset in their ear and they aren't talking to anyone. I don't know if they think it makes them look more sophisticated, but in reality it doesn't.
31I think you should only use it while driving. Is stupid to use them anywhere else! I've seen people at the mall, store, bus, train, gym and is just ridiculous! It doesn't make you look important people!!
32I think the only thing that is worse than people walking around on their bluetooth headsets is the people who use the speakerphone on their phone in crowded places but then have to keep it up so close to their ear to hear that they might as well not be on speakerphone.
Do I
really need to loudly hear both sides of your conversation??
33My husband has used one for years and we just recently got me one. It makes driving so much easier!
34nope i dont.. but really i dont think i would use it.. i have a head set and i think thats good enough, for like when im driving and what not.. im not really on the phone enough to need bluetooth!
35It's annoying, but safer, i guess, than talking on the phone in the car...
36I only use mine when i'm at home or in the car, and it's going to be a long convo, like with my parents or something...i NEVER use it in public or wear it outside of the car or house!!
37i used to use it in the car, but i found that the long ear piece with mouth thingies were way better, plus i don't have to remember to charge it or anything . . .
38I use my bluetooth all the time. I hate when I don't have it and actually have to hold a phone to my ear. I really don't care if people look at me like I'm crazy either.
39Okay, I went back and read some comments. It's not about looking important or special, it's about convenience. It's much easier for me to multi-task (wash dishes, type on the computer, drive, whatever) with it in. It's especially useful when I'm shopping, because all those who shop know that 2 hands are much better than trying to juggle a phone on your shoulder or better yet juggle whatever it is you're trying to look at with one hand.
If you don't like bluetooths, that's fine. But don't hate on the folks who do enjoy using one.
40Last Christmas I wanted one really badly, as I was in a job that I was on call 24/7 and talked more than 2k min a month. My SO was smart enough to get me one, but not the more expensive one I wanted, which turned out to be good because I switched positions 2 months later. Then, I wasn't using the phone nearly at all, so my BT need dropped. I would have continued using it if it was louder, but hadn't fallen in love with it enough to use it on a regular basis after that. I think it is in a drawer somewhere now.
41I use one all the time. It's much easier than having a corded headset in the car (and alas, I'm much too poor to afford a car with Bluetooth at the moment). And, it lets me have two hands free when I'm at home - super important with two kids, or when I'm attempting to write.
I admit that I don't usually use them in public outside of the car (with the exception of when I'm planning something and need both hands free to shop). It's not a matter of worrying that people will think I'm talking to myself (I really could care less about that), but I had a tendency to have store employees think that I wasn't on the phone and try to help me - only to have to pantomime that I was on the phone.
42I use it in the car, and that's about it. I don't have much use for it elsewhere.
43t and co same here, and sometimes when I'm trying to clean, cook and need both hands but I surely don't walk around the mall using it.
Too weird.
44so necessary when I'm conducting an interview b/c I like to type my notes. it frees up both hands and avoids a painful neck crick. But it's work only for me.
45I don't really talk while driving, so i never bought one.
but if i did, i would buy one since it's a fat ticket here in L.A. if you get pulled over talking . . .
46I was thinking of getting one because my commute is about 10 hours a week and I hate talking on my speakerphone. I'm just afraid that I will become what I hate and start using it when I am not driving.
47i actually never set mine up...my little headset is just hanging out on my desk...I don't like making calls from the car anyway, so I don't have much use for it...
48Call me harsh or old fashioned for this, but I feel that it's really a breakdown in social decorum and etiquette to just walk around in a public place (like a store, for example) having a conversation with yourself without a visible phone; it puts the people around you in an awkward and uncomfortable position. By that same token, people who speak at the top of their voices while on theit cells and loudly broadcast their conversations to everyone around them are just as bad.
They do have their place, like at the computer, and cleaning and cooking at home, but in public it's just tacky, I think. . .
49Indeed Ive had my Jabra JX10 for about a year now, it is the best little gadg I ever bought. I also use a wireless plantronics headset for work .. Im all about the headsets!
