'Tis the season of giving thanks and giving back, so it only seems appropriate that the site FreeRice has been getting a great deal of attention. The site's goals are twofold: Provide English vocabulary lessons for free and help end world hunger by providing free rice to hungry people.
The site is a definition game, offering you multiple definition choices for a given word and asking you to click on the answer that best defines the word. If you get it right, you get a harder word. If you get it wrong, the next word is easier. For each correct answer, Free Rice donates ten grains of rice to the United Nations World Food Program.

What a great concept, I am playing as I typed
1This is so great!
2that is so cool, i did it just for fun and in 11 mins i donated 600 grains of rice......
3wonderful and fun!
4I'm up to 1450 grains! woo! I'm bookmarking this site. I love anything vocabulary related.
5My friend showed me this site last week. It's awesome. There were even words I didn't know!
6Great idea. I must try it out.
7Ever wondered what I do when I'm not writing posts for Buzz? Now you know. Seriously, I have had to make all these rules for myself about when to STOP playing. I just wish it had been around when I was studying for the SAT!
8So far I've donated more than 800 grains of rice.
9What an absolutely fabulous Web site.
Thanks for making me aware that my 5 minute breaks at work can be put to a worldly use.
So cool! Just donated 500 grains of rice in under 10 minutes!
10This is awesome!
11i did 610 grains!
12Does this really donate rice? If so, cool site.
13I'm confused, why don't they just donate it without people playing? I don't mean to make fun of it or anything, I just don't understand.
14I told the 8th grade Language Arts teachers about this at my school. They took time out and played this with the whole class. The kids love it and they play it at home too!
15This is amazing!
16Wow what a great idea finally something that is worth while... I love things like this instead of giving money to charities cuz you never know where the money goes to.
17this is killing two birds with one stone: studying vocab for the SAT and donating to charity!
18I'm all about vocab building exercises and this is fun! Plus you get to feel responsible for donating food to the less fortunate. It's fab!
19If FreeRice has the rice to give, why not give it all away right now?
FreeRice is not sitting on a pile of rice―you are earning it 10 grains at a time. Here is how it works. When you play the game, advertisements appear on the bottom of your screen. The money generated by these advertisements is then used to buy the rice. So by playing, you generate the money that pays for the rice donated to hungry people.
20cool.
21I can't seem to get past level 34! How many levels are there?
I know this shouldn't be the point. The point is, are we sure we're getting rice to the people who need it? Why are they doing this? How are they calculating? Who's keeping score? Why are they forcing us to play this silly (but addictive) game of vocabulary!!
22The FAQ says there are 50 levels but that people rarely get past 48.
Thank you so much for posting this. It is AWESOME. I am sharing it with everyone at work!
23I'm a level 42. Guess I need to practice more before my GRE.
24I play this often and am really, really good. I love vocabulary!
25I just donated 1110 yay!
26New favorite thing to do when stuck on night shift! Thanks!
27I've been playing this for a while, and it is a lot of fun - plus a good distractor when I get stuck on something at work!
28wow....now i can really justify my time wasting at work!
"boss i'm helping end world hunger! how can you fault me?!?"
29Okay that was fun! I just donated 3,200 grains of rice. woot.
30Amazing.
31There are new levels now, with chemistry, maps and paintings: great!
