The iPod was recently voted the greatest gadget of all time at the 2007 T3 Gadget Awards prompting me to wonder: Is it really that great? Sure we've started integrating them into our clothes and even powering them via our bikinis, but is the device really the most impressive and innovative gadget of all time? Doesn't the widespread use of the personal computer warrant more of a fuss? In case you're wondering, the Apple iPhone was voted the "Most Anticipated Gadget of 2007" and the BlackBerry was voted the "Most Addictive Gadget of 2007." Do you think the iPod measures up?

I agree with you, geek. The computer, period is the most innovative. Without it, we wouldn't have all these other gadgets!
1It isn't the greatest gadget imho.
2But it sure is popular.
Maybe the greatest gadget of the last 10 years -- all time is a big too much. Lets see other more important gadgets at their time: thermometer, cell phone, mobile computer, clocks, radio.... they may not be cool anymore but they were gadgets when they came out.
3computer first!!
4yea, def the computer. without it, there would be no ipods!
5No it's not the greatest gadget of all time.
6I hate it when people/press automatically consider mp3 players as ipods. ipods were NOT the 1st mp3 players in the world and other companies make lots of other mp3 players. Sure, Ipods are great and a lot of people esp. in the U.S. use them, but a lot of people use other stuff too and i just don't think anyone should say mp3 players=ipods. They are just....general. that's all. That being said, mp3 player IS def one of the most impressive gadgets.
7Mediafreak: I don't think they mean to say that the MP3 play = the iPod. I think they mean exactly what they said: the iPod. You have to admit, whether anyone likes it or not, the iPod revolutionized the MP3 player market.
8But no, I don't think it's the "greatest gadget of all time."
9since you're giving credit to just one gadget and not a type of gadget, an ipod over computers makes sense.
10as for the ipod being the greatest gadget EVER (and that's a huge claim) i don't think it deserves such high accolades. but, as quiara points out, it did revolutionize not only the mp3 player market but also started a design craze of minimalistic white with rounded corners.
sure, i can see it in a lot of ways: widespread appeal, lots of copy-catting, and then the side bit about the huge success of the itunes store ...basically a lot of people have been going digital with music: is this because of the ipod only?! i just don' tknow.
11Are you kidding me? Computers can do way more... I can live without my iPod, but there's no way I can survive without my laptop!
12No, I think the iPhone is the greatest gadget of all time!!
13Absolutely not! I think it's the lamest thing i've ever seen, but knowing how i am, i'm cognizant that im the type of person to swim against the current. This device doesn't even exist to me.
14The iPod touch is my fav idea for a gadget. I like having just a basic phone so video, photo, music and web are all I need in one! I didn't even consider the computer as a gadget!
15I agree with Meg. I loove my iPod touch but I'm not sure if it's the Greatest Gadget but I still love it.
Oh, I hate when people talk about Mp3 players and mean iPod. It's iPod, not just Mp3 player
16Computer first!!!
17Mp3 players in general maybe, but I agree with mediafreak that ipod were not the first and most likely not the last.
In Germany the ipod has a share of only 25%-29% in the mp3 player market and as far as I hear the share in the US is declining - definitely does not count as greatest gadget for me. It sure is pretty but I am quite happy with my Sony player that cost less, is pretty too and has far less restrictions concerning DRM.
18Yes it's the great gadget of all time. I think mostly because it set a standard. After that gadgets had to be smaller, multi functional, look prettier, etc.
19when all of you ipod lovers have hearing damage in ten years and are wearing hearing aids - let me know if you still think it's the greatest gadget of all time.
Whatever happened to walking around and just listening to your own thoughts? Why does it always have to be music music music?
20No, not the greatest, but it's up there.
21Absolutely not--they just have the best advertising and fan base! iPods were not the first MP3 players and some would argue not even the best. There are cheaper, better looking MP3 players out there, and they have more/better features, too! Of course, it's not cool it's not iCool. I never understood the popularity of the ugly, white, plain, not-even-in-color older generation of iPods. Then they got cute, but I still think there are much better looking, better performing ones out there.
With that said, I have a shuffle, a nano, a video, and an iPhone.
22Oh, the best gadget? I'd say computers, hands down. If by gadget you mean something smaller and possibly hand-held, I'd say calculators!
23No, I don't think it is! I think more better things are to come!!!
24Hoenstly, I don't think iPODS are alll THAT great...they're pretty cool but they don't fasinate me.
ipod.. they are pretty awesome.. i dunno about BEST.. but let me tell you mine has saved me many many times at the gym! i mean i have a mp3 phone, but i would much rather use an ipod so the phone doesn't die.. n i have a connecter in my car.. which has also saved my on long trips when those good old cd's run out!... soo like i said maybe not the BEST ever.. but its pretty damn good!
25Definately one of my favorites, but the personal computer and cellphones have changed the way we live. I don't remember the last time I left my house without a cellphone...
26i don't know if the ipod is the greatest gadget of all time but, i know he is for me one of the best.
27I think all the fun cell phones are the greatest gadgets lately. The computer doesn't seem like a gadget to me...it's a staple, but that's just me...
28I love my enV phone!!!
Computer first, without those no online shopping!
29I believe that computers are the greatest gadget. I think number two would be more in the way of cell phones. Then maybe MP3 players. But in my opinion video game consoles, cell phones, and laptops trump my MP3 player. I would save those three things before my MP3 player out of a burning house.
30I think it is, to me. I listen to music every day at work, and to whoever said about listening to your own thoughts - I do, but I listen to music at work to avoid listening to 60+ other people's thoughts
31I kinda think the invention of cellular technology and the cell phone is the greatest of all time personally.
32I vote for TiVO.
33i love it. yet i have never owned a tivo.
34Is a computer still a gadget? I think gadget implies it's a smaller than a computer... The portable mp3 player was definitely revolutionary. I think where the iPod comes out on top is before it there wasn't anything like it.
6 months before the release of the first iPod I bought a 256MB Rio mp3 player. It cost me $299. There were other bigger mp3 players out but I chose the Rio for its portable size. I think there was a 10GB player out but it was HUGE and had a full sized 3.5" hard drive in it! So the release of the 5GB iPod with a screen and it didn't skip when you ran with it was such a leap in the technology at the time. I think it isn't a bad choice for the award. I however would pick Cell Phone as the best gadget. I can go a day without my iPod but my cell phone is a much more necessary item in my life. I would go so far as to say the iPhone should take the top honor. Until it is available on various service providers it probably won't get the votes.
35I love my ipod. Love it!!!
