As you've probably noticed, the pay phone booths of yesteryear have been replaced with free WiFi and cell phone charging stations. According to a recent study by the Pew Research Center, in 2007, 81 percent of the U.S. population owned a cell phone, a 20 percent increase compared to 2002.
While we all use our beloved mobiles for phone calls, texting and even dating, we often overlook our phone's most simple functions and features. I've detailed some of my favorite cell phone tips in the past, but I decided to share a handful of easy ways to use your celly. For the first part in my new series, read more
You've probably decked out your bedroom with a trendy iPod compatible alarm clock, but you can still use your cell phone's alarm for plenty of things.
- Set your phone alarm at night: Consider setting your cell phone alarm clock at night and plugging it in a couple feet away from your bed. It will make you get up out of bed to turn it off instead of snoozing. Hey, you might even be inspired to get up and work out.
- Set your alarm for break reminders: Almost 75 million Americans spend their working hours in front of the computer, and according to Northwestern Health more than 50 percent of office workers report some form of eye strain. What's my advice? Take breaks from the computer! My eye doctor suggested I look up from the computer ever 15 minutes if possible and look around the room. While I probably won't do that, I've been setting my phone and computer to remind me to take breaks.
- Motivation: If you're sick and tired of working on a certain project move on to something else for a couple of hours and set an alarm to remind you to go back to the project later. You'll feel refreshed and motivated when the alarm rings.

My hubbie sets his cell phone as his back-up alarm in the mornings. Since he works construction in the southwest, sometimes he has to get up really early, like 1:30 AM this morning, so the cell alarm works out good because a lot of the time, he hits snooze on the one near the bed.
I use mine on my blackberry to tell me when it's time to start working in the mornings - i get up rather early to do household chores and the like, so I set it for 7am so that I know it's time to bust out the laptop and start my work day.
1I use my cell alarm for everything!
2From taking my birthcontrol pill, to waking up in the morning, to entering in something that's going to be on TV!
It really does help, because I ALWAYS have my cell on me!
This is great thanks!
3Wow, this is really smart. I've got a variable schedule, and an iPod touch, so I can set all of my alarms in advance and not worry about remembering to change my alarm. Thanks for the tip!
4yeah my friend sets her cell alarm to take birth control, its a good idea!
5i misplace my cell all the time so its not really a good idea for me to use the alarm
I use my alarm on my cell when I travel
6i always use my alarM! and its nice i can set it to only go off monday to friday!.. so its ALWAYS on.. and i set it for everything! if i have an event comin up! alram goes on! haha.. or gettin my butt outta bed! alram goes on!.. ne thing and everything that it can be used for i use!
7I use my cell phone as my sole alarm for traveling, and when at home I use it as a back up. I always coordinate them, so the alarm clock by the bed will go off once, then I hit snooze, then it'll go off again and five minutes later the cell will go off and I'll have to get up to turn it off. It's a complicated process to wake my butt up in the mornings!
8when my father was sick and he was taking several different pills in different hours. the different alarm settings in the cell phone helped me remember to administer the medication.
9yup i have an lg chocolate and use the music alarm to wake up in the morning for school.
so i wake up to whatever song would work best in the morning. haha because even depending on how i go to bed i'll know how i'll wake up.
10great ideas Geek! i'll use them on my DS instead since that is what I use as my alarm clock!
11I actually use my iCal on my computer. I don't know what I'd do without it. It has a whole list of reminders for work. I wouldn't want my phone's alarm to disturb anyone at work. It's already rang a few times (when I forget to put it on silence) and that was pretty embrassing.
12Alarms on cell phones are a big help.
13i always use my cell phone alarm in the morning. i just have to be careful though because i think i've ignored someone's call early in the morning, thinking i hit the snooze!
14The only alarm I use is my cell phone to wake up in the mornings for work.
