A few weeks ago Giggle was sitting through the eighth 30-minute sitting period in an all day meditation when her phone began to ring. The room was completely silent — save for light breathing — when she heard the phone's first vibration noises and she quickly scrambled across the floor to turn it off.
She was understandably mortified and when she told me the story, I realized it's an incident we've all experienced at one time or another. I got a call once when I was sitting down to a fancy dinner date and while I didn't answer it, my date was totally taken aback and later admitted he thought it was one of my friends calling to offer me an escape route.
Obviously, the fact that we carry our cell phones everywhere with us means we are prone to an awkward call every once in a while, but it's definitely something most of us don't look forward to. Have you ever received a phone call at an embarrassing moment?

I HATE getting calls when your sitting on the can!
1It's horrible because you want to answer it, but because of the echo and everything peopel know your in the bathroom!
I got a call in a job interview one time because I forgot to put my phone on silent. VERY embarrassing! I apologized, and the person interviewing me said it was okay if I needed to take the call (I didn't). I got the job anyway.
2WHEW!
I went to church a long time ago and forgot to turn my ringer off. All my ringtones are real tones so I had some Metallica rockin' in church. I was very embarrassed, I haven't been there since.
3I got a call when I was in class, I was in the middle of a huge presentation, and while I was up presenting, my teacher decided to sit at my chair, with my book bag on the floor next to him. I heard my phone start singing, all I could do was pretend it wasn't ringing and continue presenting cuz I couldn't run to shut it off.
4I had a phone interview for a job that was supposed to come between 2 and 5 one afternoon. When 5:30 rolled around I assumed the call would come another day, so I went to the bathroom. The phone rang and I had my entire interview in the ladies room. I'm sure he wondered what the echo was.
I got the job.
5I forgot to turn the phone off in class once and my instructor asked everyone to keep quiet and told me to take the call. I was slightly embarrassed, but I did. When I answered, all I heard was 'Quack Quack Quack Quack' and my 7 year old niece laughing in the background. I was trying to speak loud enough for her to hear me and get on the phone but she kept holding her toy to the phone - 'Quack Quack Quack Quack'. My professor enjoyed the whole scene of me squirming while trying not to yell into the phone.
6Actually I am really good about turning off my phone so I haven't gotten any calls like this....yet.
7Class....i hate getting a call in a lecture hall of 300 in which it seems like all 300 are paying attention to the professor. It has happened to me twice- once during a test. eeep!
8Class....my phone is never set on "noise", but it's set on vibrate, and I get this weird feeling that people can hear my phone vibrating.
I ALWAYS turn the ringer/vibrate OFF when i'm at school...all day long. Unfortanutely, it means that I miss some important calls sometimes, but whatever....they know for me school comes first.
9My mother called when I was in the middle of a big presentation at a conference. And of course I couldn't find my phone so it kept ringing.
Another time, I was accepting an award and my boss called. Funny thing is I had to answer it.
10I haven't had an incident yet but now that we talk about it, it'll probably happen.
11Place of worship
12I used to put my phone on vibrate whenever I was somewhere that I didn't want it to ring, but after having it vibrate in my purse, still very audible, during things like job interviews and movies, I now turn my phone to "all off" or just turn it off altogether.
13i got a call on the first day of a class when the instructor had just finished telling us that she hated phones going off and it was really rude and distracting and all that. oopsies.
14I got a call from a friend during the national anthem, worst part was, her phone died after that, so when i hung up, I never got a hold of her again!
15I keep it on vibrate most of the time so it's not an issue.
Apologies to the above posters that may have done this... but I can't stand it when someone comes into the public restroom on the phone or takes a call in there. They may not care that the person on the other end can hear them pee but I don't want someone on the phone hearing me pee! As my secret revenge I flush a few extra times or cough a lot
16I was at the bank setting up a new account. It was very embarrassing because it rang the first time so I pressed ignore. Well I forgot to turn it to silent, so when the same person called back, it went off again. I kept apologizing and I felt terrible.
17haha macgirl you crack me up. I think I will do that next time someone is on the phone in the ladie's room.
18also beside the romantic date there was at work(talking to the BIG boss) and it was always that guy I know who was looking for our common female friend(he loved her) and he was so ASSERTIVE I'd cancel and press no and he kept ringing over and over again until my battery went low.
19I didn't even have the chance to switch it off bcz once I'd look and try to press any buttons he'd ring again, Isay am busy and that I don't know where (...) is or haven't seen her in months, then they try and call again in 5 minutes while I am still in the important convo with the boss!
Rant over!!
lol
My friend has called me when I was at school, it was a mathematics hour.
20my teacher didn't like that. (he was a bad teacher)
In the bedroom during, um, yeah... And it was my grandma.
21My phone ranged when I was in church(a Catholic Church). the ring tone said, "pick up the got damn phone b*tch." I was so ashamed.
