I was cruising through TeamSugar's Technology and Gadgets channel this weekend and I happened upon nitronat's post about her parent's computer and the never-ending Mac or PC debate.
nitronat wondered how many years should a computer last you, because her parents have had their HP desktop for about three years.
While I probably upgrade more often than most people, I think the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" rule applies when it comes to buying a new computer, especially if you only use it sparingly. Any thoughts?

I don't even know how old I was when I got my first one...probably 9 or 10..my dad works in telecommunications so we scored one when they first started coming out.
1My laptop's about 2 years old, but I'm already running into problems where I know that the technology in it isn't quite sufficient for using it 24/7.
(My desktop computer's about 4 years old, but that one we've been upgrading constantly)
2since feb 07...i'll probably keep it until next fall when i start law school.
3oh this computer ( misread the thing)
4this computer a year or two
I'm currently at work..so this doesnt count..My laptop probably about 2 years old..My desktop is from '98 - right before I went to college..So yea havent used that in a long time..Probably should get rid of it since it has a monitor the size of a TV ( 17 inch screen )
5I got my laptop for Mother's day so it is a baby yet. But my other computers I have had for at least 5 years or more.
64 years for this laptop and it's still doing pretty well. My parents have a Gateway behemoth from '98 still running back home.
7My computer's 6 months old. My old one was closing in on 4 years when the mother board died, and it was cheaper to buy a new one. I'm still not 100% sure I like Windows Vista yet, though.
8got this one in november 2006, so it is almost a year old. i got a refurbished imac 20" in february 2006 but sold it in november to get this macbook. previously, i had a powerbook g4 for about 5 years! i'd still have it if the hinge on the screen hadn't broken as it works fine, still.
9Just about three years.
10I have about a million computers, but I've only had the one I'm using now for one or two.
11I've had my Flamingo Pink Dell Inspiron for two weeks, and I love it!
I figured out why I don't like Macs. It's because of the cascading windows. I like maximized windows and I don't want to have to do it manually all the time.
if you do go with a PC - be sure to get 2GBs of memory in order to handle Vista. 1 GB won't cut it.
But with 2GBs, it's smooth sailing.
12About 2 months!
13I've had my macbook for 3 weeks. Before that, I had a Dell for a year. And before that it was like 3 years. I'm a gadget freak. I love to upgrade. My visits to the mall must always include a trip to the Apple store. Don't know why but I must.
142 months on this one. I have to get a new one with every rev of MacBook Pro due to my work.
I strongly believe that people should upgrade every 1-3 years. While the "if it isn't broke why fix it" rule is generally a good one we find that people who don't upgrade for a really long time have serious compatibility issues when something does go wrong and can cost them more money all at once.
15I have had my desktop for close to 7 years (Compaq). I replaced my IBM laptop that I had for 6 years with another Lenovo/IBM last year.
16I've had my MacBook a little over a year, but before that I had a beast of a laptop for five years- all throughout college. At this point, since I use my laptop every day at work, I think I'll try to upgrade every two years or so.
17i've had a Dell Inspiron 600m for two years (this computer, actually) but i know it's about time for a new one- i've got about six GB of free space left and i use it nearly every day. maybe i'll just get a new hard drive... and m key, because this one somersaults off the keyboard.
18i bought my macbook in March this year. before that i used my ibook for 1 year plus.
19I got my laptop in July of 2006, so it's been a year and four months since I've had my computer. I read that you're supposed to get a new computer every four years to change it. I always thought it was eight years, but whatevs.
20my HP desktop lasted about 4 years, and i just got a HP laptop so hopefully this one lasts longer!
21i got my newest computer this summer, and i already feel like its obsolete! cool it with the technology already! i can't afford to keep up. i really don't even care if i keep up with the newest gear, but i'm afraid nothing will work if i don't have a new computer every couple of months. i'm not that fast paced.
22My MacBook is about 7 weeks old now..I love it!
23My ibook is on it's last leg, and it's only three years old, but i ordered a macbook today, can't wait for it to arrive.
24My Macbook is only a couple of months old, but the Dell Inspiron 6000 before it was less than 3 years old before someone broke into our house and stole it.
The Mac Pro is almost 3, too.
25Graduation '07 gift. =)
26My current computer is 2 years old.
The computer we had before my current computer was about 7
27my desktop's a pc that i've had going on 5 years now. it still works great and i try to do my part in maintaining it.. i love my computer
i have a small ibook that's a couple of years old that i take to class and such. i guess i still prefer pcs over macs because pcs are what i grew up with and i know the specifics so much better, but i do think that for someone who doesn't know anything about computers in general, macs are probably easier to use.
28like about a month.
29My boyfriend is in the IT industry, so we upgrade our desktops as the better components come out. My laptop is about 2 years old. I would generally keep a laptop for around 3 years, unless a super-awesome one comes out, but a laptop is a laptop. I just use it for when I'm sick or otherwise don't feel like moving, lol.
30My Mac tower is about six years old, and still going strong, despite my very intensive use. All i've needed to do was chuck some extra RAM, extra Firewire ports and a second HD into it. Probably won't even think of replacing it for another 2-3 years.
31My baby (Dell Inspiron, the computer of university students everywhere!) is a little over 2 years. Apart from one cd-drive change, and a dire need for an external harddrive come christmas she's still going strong, and hopefully will be for at least the final two years of my degree.
32thanks for all the info here - as geek sugar said I was wondering about this in one of my blog posts - This laptop is relatively new. My HP laptop died at about 2 years old. It all of a sudden started having a few problems and it would all be expensive to fix. Hopefully this one (my MacBook) will last for the next two years at least (to get me through college).
Parents have had theirs for about 3 years but we had our old one for oh - a long time, but we had to update get a new one because it ended up being considerably behind times (we were using Windows 3.1 for the longest time). We got it when it was already old - given to us because the people who owned it got a new computer. But parents aren't hard on a computer so it's probably not going to break down on them but when it does they won't know what to do. Or what's happening. One just learned what a link was the other day. So I have to be the one that has to trouble shoot their problems (or send attachments for them!). So yeah...
33it's not really a matter of how long they can last as it is how long you can go with a computer that is slower / less advanced than the newer models. when i got my powerbook g4 in june 04 i gave my 2000 blueberry ibook to my aunt for her 2 kids to share for home school. and they still use it. there's not dvd burner and it's a little slow, but still running fine. i just put a new and bigger harddrive in my g4, i'm hoping it lasts a few more years.
34I've had my laptop for 2 years. I plan to get a new one after I graduate from college in 09.
35My laptop is 2 years, going on 3. I'm not in a hurry to replace it as it is purely an internet-surfin', occasional document-writin' and future note takin' computer.
My desktop is almost 2 years old and I plan to replace it this winter as it is my gaming computer. 2 years old is ancient in that respect.
36Got a new Vaio for my b-day in Feb...I love it & I love Vista!
37My computer was given to me. It's a hammidown. So i'v only been using it for about a month.
38I got my original computer in 2003. I've since put in a new motherboard and processor...new hard drive, a DVD burner and several other bits. The only part in it more than a year old currently is my modem.
Its not that I think its needs to be done often adding hardware is something I find fun.
39My current computer is a little more than a year old. Before this one, I had a Powerbook 1400 from 1996 that my dad got from work when his company was getting rid of it for being so old. I used it all through undergrad, and the biggest problems I had with it weren't because it was old, but because it was a Mac on a PC campus. But we decided that when I went off to grad school it might be a good idea to leave the dinosaur behind. I don't really use it for anything, but I still have it. I am very fond of it.
40ClassicDiva it probably had a tiny bit to do with it being so old as well. The PowerBook 1400 is missing so many of the standard ports that both PC's and Mac's have in common these days. This is the perfect example of why not to go with the "it's still working" theory. You probably had a really hard time finding any printers that would be compatible due to you not having any modern standard ports or even a current operating system that would be compatible if you did find a printer you could print to... This would probably be the case if you had a PC that was 11 years old as well.
A computer year is like 25 human years.
41I've had my laptop for about 10 months(the previous one i had for 3 yrs)and my desktop is a year and a half old and it's replacing the one i had for 7 yrs.....
42I've had my Gateway laptop for about five years, and bought it refurbished. I don't play video games or anything, but I am writing articles and doing research for my doctoral dissertation using only this computer, so I have no urge to change! (I did add on some memory, and very carefully back everything up at mozy.com and onto my Zen every other day - just in case!)
43Less than a year for my mac book, but that is cuz I spilled on my old one
44My desktop I've had for about three years but I don't use it as often so it is fine.
I've had my mac G4 desktop for about four to five years. I recently got a Mac book pro for less than a year. I still love them both! My G4 is still running strong. It's just a little on the slow side.
45i got a new macbook pro 2 days.
my old one was almost 2 years old.
appele
46i bought my current computer last year but i still have my old computer that is almost 8 years old
47i bought my current computer last year but i still have my old computer that is almost 8 years old
48sorry i didnt want to double post
49My lappy is 3 human years or 75 computer years, according to MacGirl.
