We already have cell phone access in the Metro in DC (in the tunnels depending on carrier, not just the stations) and I hate that I get stuck listening to everyone else's conversations. When it's 7am, I have no desire to overhearing about the two men you slept with last weekend, sorry.

I say yay, because some people have families and a very long train ride. There could be an emergency. I know that when obnoxious people are talking on their cell phones, it's rather annoying, but I tend to feel that it's the people, not the phone causing the problem. I'm sure if they didn't have their cell phone they'd find some other way to be obnoxious. Oh, well, that's what iPods are for, right?

i'm in between, it's just going to encourage more obnoxious conversations on the trains- it used to be the one place without obnoxious cell phone calls, just regular obnoxious people,
but i also think it's great because sometimes you really need to make a call when you're underground, like during the flood last month i was trapped on a train in a tunnel for 3 and a half hours, if i had been able to call my office and know that someone was there ( i was supposed to open)i could have saved the aggravation and gotten off in between

I like that this is being addressed, but I 'm really glad to hear that no one will be able to make calls in the trains. It's gotten so ridiculous that no one ever gets off the phone and I'm forced to listen to everyone's truly boring conversations; not to mention that everyone is so distracted by their phones that they are paying NO attention to what they are doing or where they are walking - like against the line and right into moving traffic. Whatever happened to just being out?

I'm glad that it will be accessible in the subway station but not in the actual train. It would be so tedious if it were in the train

OMFG, no thanks. People already don't know how to act with their phones on the street, in restaurants, stores - on a platform where they'll be shouting at the top of their lungs in what amounts to an echo chamber? Less fun i've never had.

God help us all if those obnoxious Nettel walkie-talkie phones work underground, too.

i constantly get traffic updates and news on my phone so i would use it for that purpose.

all the same when riding on the subway in ny and the train is outside, people are on their phones anyway. so it wouldn't be anything different then what is happening today.

Thank you wicltd! People have no idea of what is appropriate to discuss on a cell in public. In NYC, I used to take the express bus for a nice, relaxing commute and then people started riding the bus and talking from 34th St all the way to the Bronx. I don't care about your baby's daddy or about those shoes you have your eye on.

This is the worst and most unimportant thing that the MTA should be concerning themselves with. How about lowering that fare with your two sets of financial books?! How about trains that run on time or tunnels that don't flood?! Talk about not having your priorities straight!

I think it's great, because even though there will be more ease in using cell phones--especially for necessary calls--there will still be limits for the courtesy of fellow riders.

I am curious to know what people consider "necessary" cell phone calls, because I don't think it's really that important unless you're on fire or being hunted by a mob of zombies..

Needing to call your friend to whine about life and everything in it.. Is not necessary

Dicussing your latest STD or conquest...Is not necessary

Discussing that cute think your kid/pet did.. is not necessary

and personal information of any kind is not necessary when you're in public.. Because NO ONE WANTS TO HEAR IT

and until the general public gain some manners, i think cellphones should only be used in private.. Not walking down the street making you a hazard to everyone around you.. Or on public transportation making you a nucience to everyone within hearing range to your conversastion

I can't imagine being trapped in a subway cars while everyone was talking on their phones, let alone people that use their walkie-talkies. I can't stand it in a convenience store for 2 minutes. I'm all for having service at the station though. But it would just be awful in the trains, it's just way to crowded.

Do you really think that the phone calls will be limited to the stations? Look at how many people try to call when the train goes above ground briefly; you get a chorus of "I can talk for two minutes -- can you hear me?" Inevitably people will try this when they approach the wireless stations.

Fortunately, I don't have to deal with this because I commute by express bus. Unfortunately, the cell phone situation is even worse. People talk extra loud either unnecessarily or because they want to be heard over traffic. You know what? It's 6:30 AM! (Or, on the commute home, I've been at work for 12 hours!) I don't want to hear about your personal problems.

Unless there's ACTUALLY an emergency, exercise some courtesy to your fellow commuters.

I'm pretty neutral about this change. I think that at this point, so many people are listening to their ipods and mp3 players that it won't bother that many people if others are on their cell phones.

Only emergency service should be allowed. The prospect of being subject to subway riders' conversations makes me cringe...as if we need another reason to rage on the subway. How about the MTA provides DECENT PA SERVICE SO WE DON'T WAIT ON PLATFORMS FOR 45 MIN WAITING FOR TRAINS THAT NEVER COME.

Definitely for it, especially if there is an emergency.

It's a nice break from hearing people shout into phones and obnoxious ring tones... I remember the last time I was in London, a woman was being rude and loud in a lift down to the platform and midsentence she says, "hang on my other phone is ringing"... other phone!! omfg! Yes, her annoyance capacity then increased.. It's nice quiet time when cellphones don't work or can't be used... like on planes... ahh

We have it here in DC and it can be great somedays, but horrible others. People yelling on their phones next to you because the sound of the train is too loud. Yeah, that is NOT fun!!!

I'm sure it will be obnoxious, but when my little petite frame is traveling home late night by myself, I'd like the reassurance that I could call someone if things get a little sketchy.

Yay for txt msg service. Nay for voice service unless there is an emergency situation.
