Last time I checked, I had somewhat of a social life—even though I spend a majority of my time online. A recent survey found that surfing the net has become an obsession for many, with the majority of U.S. adults feeling they cannot go for a week without going online, and one in three giving up friends and sex for the web?
The survey asked 1,011 American adults how long they could go without internet access and found that 15 percent said a day or less, 21 percent said a couple of days and another 19 percent said a few days. Results also showed that 20 percent have less time for sex because they are online.
Now that is a poll in itself...which do you prefer surfing the net or sex? via Slashdot

hehe well I only go on the internet at work...not during the evenings or weekends...
1i go on the internet all day all the time. i don't really care if it affects my social life- i was a nerd all through high school and college and hence do not have very many connections. all my friends live pretty far dispersed so the net is the best way for me to be social. that will likely change once i start my full-time job after i graduate.
2Awhile ago I thought I couldn't give up the Web for long, but I've gone weeks without it. At first it was difficult, but after a few days and with more things to do, I kept myself busy and kinda didn't mind.
But since having jobs that require me to be online, well...I'm online a lot. I probably could go without checking my email as often as I do, or at the most maybe every hour, but until I have to do that, I'll stick with my habits.
Besides, I'm
socially awkward anyway.
3I think I spend way too much time online. One because well I have access at work so why not? Two - my good friends from college or past jobs have moved far away and the net is the only way to keep in touch via chat or email.
I think I also go on just to pass time or to not really think about the crazy things going on in my life.
I've actually gone a week or even then some without going online and it's actually been great but then I get sucked in again
I have to start being productive with my time..reading, exercising..and not going on the net
4sad, but true. i don't have any of my books here and there's not much to do in the city so i am on the internet all the time - could this be because i have found so many great websites and commnities online lately?!
yay teamsugar!!
5although I'm an internet addict, I'd choose going out or sex over it anyday. What's wrong with those people :S
6I only spend long hours online because of my boyfriend, but once we start living together I highly doubt I'd ever come online again except to Google/Wiki things, check mail, and prowl Sugar of course.
7I loves me some internet! But I also loves me some lovin'! hee hee
8Haha, Um well. I like the internet. But i don't think i'd be willing to give up my friends for it & a certain other thing.
9I don't get why compare having sex with being online
10there is hundreds of things to compare being online with.
Giving up friends is one, but whats with the whole sex issue.
Just seems like it was the only way to get attention to the study.
Do they want people to have more sex, or what
where do comparing it effect or have anything to do with the other.
Working out, friendships, things that connect people as social creatures.
People CAN live without sex it but interaction with others helps people stay connected in the world. It is often suggested when someone is disconnected or depressed to spend time with others.
It isnt suggest to go sleep with someone just because you are depressed
shakes head seems a stupid comparison.
I know I spend a lot of time online (I'm a full time student and ALL my classes are online) but I don't think I give up my life for it. Maybe for a few weeks at the start of the school year because I was going through a funk because I had to move back in with my parents (i'm so sad without my own apartment!) I still love sex though, wouldn't give it up!
11Oh, I am so guilty of this...and it's gotten WORSE since I started using TS. LOL.
This site is ridiculously addictive.
12I usually spend most my internet time at work. Tho I guess I can get sucked into the internet every so often....haha
13I am a college student with two computers in my room both in use. And I have a technology based major but yet I always pick my social life over the computer, even if it means just sitting outside with friends and talking. But when it comes to hw and pretending to do hw (procrastinating) thats when i become extra obsessed with surfing the web lol but i guess thats a given right
14I'm sucked in by it.
15Bleh. I spend so much time on the web I can go through 3 or 4 weeks without a computer, easily.
(Sure having an 80GB iPod helps a lot, but still, haha!)
16I've been thinking more about this, and I think this is why people have been getting other things such as phones and ipods that have internet, so they can still get their internet fix without actually being at a computer....(i know i'm guilty
