I have finally gotten used to the weekly, "Did you get my email?" phone calls from my mother. Predictably, every Sunday around late afternoon, she calls to tell me about something cute my nieces have done, or fill me in on the latest gossip about someone I went to high school with. "I wrote this in an email, didn't you read it?" she'd say. Of course, I had never received the email, and just assumed my less-than-tech-savvy mother was doing something wrong. This time though, I asked a question that I don't normally ask: "What email address are you sending it to?" She rattled off an address I hadn't even thought about for at least a year. Oops.
I logged into the old account and, lo and behold, amid a ton of spam in my inbox were a bunch of emails from Mom.
Most of you leave old social networking profiles online even if you don't use them, but what about old email addresses? Do you close old accounts when you open a new one?

I used to leave old accounts open and, more often than not, I'd end up forgetting about them. But then I had a similar experience with a friend who was trying to get in touch with me...at my *old* address. After that I decided to shut down the accounts I wasn't using anymore. Now I might leave one open and check it from time to time, but only until I get the word around that I've changed my address.
1I have only had 2 email addresses that I have used for personal communication, and my current one for 5+ years. No confusion there!
2my primary e-mail is one i've used for 5+ years as well, but I also have a secondary e-mail that i rarely use or check. and i'm absolutely certain that out there somewhere are some VERY old e-mail addresses that i've forgotten about, but never closed.
3I log into some of my older accounts very rarely. I should probably just go ahead and delete them since they only receive junk mail.
4I have two yahoo and aol but I use yahoo the most
5Guilty, I have at least 2 or 3 old email accounts that I don't remember the passwords for so I never check them.
6i have several email addresses, but i have them all forwarded to one inbox. i forward old email addresses to my new address so i continue to get mail from the old address.
7I don't want to leave old email addresses open and unchecked. I try my best not to forget about old email addresses, because I know there'll still be the occasional email coming in. When I get those, I reply to whoever sent it to me, informing them of my new email address. If it's some mail listing, I unsubscribe.
8If I don't use them anymore I delete them. I don't like to have too many addresses. I've had the same email address for about 12 years now.
9I used to have a lot of different email addresses (hotmail, msn, yahoo, etc) But now I only have my main GMAIL, a ME email for my iPhone and one for all the junk mails. Okay so I still have a lot but its a huge cut back
