Sometimes, you know in advance that celebs will be lending their voices to video games. Take Afro Samurai for example. Taken from a TV show, it was only natural that Samuel L. Jackson would narrate the action. But imagine my surprise when I cracked open Halo 3: ODST to hear one of my favorite geeks, and one hot cylon voicing two characters in the game. Nathan Fillion (or as I still call him, Captain Mal) and Tricia Helfer of Battlestar Galactica not only speak throughout the game, but their likeness is also used, making this an enjoyable game for more than just the action.
It made me start to wonder if I would have rushed right out and bought the game on release day if I had known that two of my favorite personalities were included (answer — yes, if I was able to that is). But how do you feel: do celeb cameos in video games make you want to rush out and buy?

No - in and of themselves, who is voicing a character will not make me buy a game in which I otherwise have no interest. However, if I am already interested in a game - for instance Halo:ODST or Brutal Legend - I do find celebrity voice work (if done well) can be a nice bonus. As long as they don't "mail it in" that is....
1You forgot Adam Baldwin (Jayne) and Alan Tudyk (Wash)! Being a big Firefly fan, I had to point it out.
Anyway, having these guys involved actually made me more curious about ODST for sure, but I won't be buying that on fangirlism alone - I will, however, be either renting it or borrowing it from a friend to determine whether it's worth dipping into my video game fund.
2sadly I say yes. I bought True Crime N.Y. city simply for the fact that I learned that Christopher Walken was a character voice in the game. Lucky for me I had a great time with the game and actually played it to the end.
3I wouldn't buy a game purely due to a celebrity voice-over but I was pleasantly surprised when I realised that Claudia Black was voicing a character in Uncharted 2.
4I wouldn't buy a game just because it had a famous person's voice in it, however, the fact that Tim Curry voices the bad guy in Brutal Legend just makes me want the game more. Granted, I would have wanted it if the legendary Dio were still the guy voicing him, but I'd also want it if all the voices were by celebrities/non celebrities I didn't care as much about.
