A couple in Reno, Nevada have pleaded guilty to child neglect after their 22-month old son and 11-month old daughter were found severely malnourished and suffering other health problems last month. According to WRAL News, the couple, Michael and Iana Straw, were too busy playing video games like "Dungeons and Dragons" to feed and care for their young children. Authorities note that Mr. Straw had just inherited $50,000 and spent the money on computer equipment and a plasma TV.
The children are said to be doing much better and gaining weight in foster care. As for the Straws, they both face a maximum 12-year prison sentence.
This story is absolutely heart-wrenching. How could two grown adults be so irresponsible to neglect their children in this way? Could Dungeons and Dragons really be the cause of such poor parenting and inhumane treatment? We keep hearing that video game addiction is on the rise and news that some doctors want to treat the addition like drug or alcohol abuse, but is it really that powerful?

just stupid people being stupid parents... you should have to take a test before you can spawn...
1Wow this is crazy!
2I know a couple who did something similar with their baby girl. I would go visit and baby would have been in crib for 12 hours straight, covered in sweat, not bathed for days, and needing a daiper change. Kuckily, they dont' have custody of her anymore, although instead of taking baby to the grandma's house i should have taken her to child protective services so that the second one they had (yes they had another) would have been snatched up.
3I think that video can be addicting but you can control the amount of time you spend. This is such a sad story.

I am so sad to hear about this. I seriously want to cry. I love my son so much and I cannot
imagine doing this to him. How can people do that to their own children is beyond me. I want to adopt all the babies who aren't cared for and just be the crazy baby lady instead of like a
crazy cat lady. They just don't understand you know? And they need that love and attention.
5I bet it's that dang World of Warcraft!

I couldnt agree more.
Which a couple that dumb, if it wasnt video games it would have been something else as an excuse. I dont think you can blame games on this at all.
7Oh my gosh...now listen, my husband likes to play video games and stay on his computer a lot (he's a computer technician at Best Buy) Sometimes if I leave my son with him to go to the store really quick, I'll come back and my hubby will still be on the computer, my son is still in his pajamas and still in front of the tv. And you should SEE how hard I light into that man. He now understands that if I ever catch him doing that again...well, serious talking needs to be done.
8Sickening.
Gaming can be a compulsive behavior just as much as gambling can. It's a problem that probably won't go away, as video games get higher and higher tech and more involved, especially MMORPG
s like WoW or D&D Online.
Just like we still have gambler-aholics, we'll probably always have gameaholics. I'm just glad the children were removed from that home.
9It is all about balance...this is just so sad for the kids. Both my Husband and I have played WoW and now I am into Lord of the Rings Online. I tell you though, my son is never left wanting. We only play while he naps or is sleeping. It is all about balancing what is right for your child and whatever interests you have.
10That's awful!
11i definitely think it is that powerful, sad but true i know people that have had there lives basically stolen from video/computer whatever games,... it makes me sad..
12i mean i know ultimately its their decision to play these games and that it stems from underlying issues within ones self... but...... still...
YES! IS VERY POWERFUL!!!
a while ago you had a thread with the same topic...and most of the responses...were like..."noo, video games are not an addiction"..."only losers do that"..."I can stop"..."that's pathetic"....at the time I thought it was better not to comment anything...a waste of time I thought....
but I have seen it with my own eyes...intellingent, successful people...NOT LOSERS...have become addicts to games online...it is sad and maddening and i have never been able to understand how a video game can get a hold of one person sooooo much. BUT I HAVE SEEN IT and IT DOES HAPPEN...maybe is not in the millions but an addiction doesn't need millions of affected people to become an addiction.....
these are people with friends, family, social lives that CHOOSE to stay at home an LEVEL UP....yes, maybe there are other psych conditions affecting them, like depression but it doesn't make it any less of a problem if the person is alreayd affected by something else...isn't that the problem with ALL addictions????
I HATE WORLD OF WORCRAFT....I HATE IT!
13I really think there is some addictive behavior going on. I don't blame games like WoW for "pulling" people in. I really think there is a huge problem with parenting going on these days. In just the last week I've heard stories of 12 year olds kidnapping a neighbors baby for a $200,000 ransom, 13 year olds beating and raping adults and just other horrible stuff. Where are these kids parents? What is going on in this world?
14crazy stuff. my brother will sit at his computer playing games for hours and hours and practically won't eat unless you put some food infront of him. luckily, i doubt he'll ever marry and have kids (hee hee, so mean i know).
15I absolutely agree with how many of you feel this is just wrong on so many levels, because it is. But video games ARE an addiction, I never thought it was possible but it IS. I started playing World of Warcraft in 2005 with my husband, and I just recently canceled my subscription for the THIRD time in 5 months because I'm absolutely fickle and yes, I was addicted. It took me uninstalling the game so that I wouldn't go back to it. And now, I want to play, even though I haven't played in months. I would just sit on my ass for 12 hours a day if I could, playing that retarded game. But I tell you what, if I had a child, I wouldn't have any games on my computer, period. They're all addictive. And on top of that, I would ask my husband to do the same. It's bad...
16I play WOW. I have a lot of friends playing too. Two of them were the most addicted of us. And they stopped ! I'm so happy for them ! I'm stopping WOW too. This couple who forgot to feed their baby must have been crazy not to stop ! They have a serious problem, the shouldn't go to jail but they should go to hospital, see a specialist. You can be addicted to a game, but being addicted is a thing, forgetting your children is another.
17Video games are certainly addictive, as is anything that is pleasurable! I play games like this all the time with my boyfriend. I see people in game neglecting their kids ALL THE TIME. They'll say something like: Hold on, I have to get my son a bottle. Or: BRB, my daughter's crying. I just want to scream: GO PARENT YOUR CHILDREN!! It's not easy giving up something you enjoy doing to be a good parent, but it's what mature, responsible, good parents do. You had the kid, now deal with it.
18Good grief! That is just f-ed up!
