Mike Massimino (Mass; @Astro_Mike) sent multiple tweets from space during the STS-125 mission, and it was an incredible treat to follow and read his ruminations on being where few have gone before, seeing what few have gotten to see with their own eyes (and hopefully where many will get to go and see soon).
Currently, Mark Polansky (@Astro_127) is in quarantine in preparation for a hopeful launch into orbit on Saturday for the STS-127 mission. Jose Hernandez (Astro_Jose) will be poised to be the first bi-lingual tweeter when he goes up in August for the STS-128 mission.
Space Twittering indeed could be a great way to get people more involved and enthusiastic in endeavors outside of Earth. I can attest that I've watched more NASA-TV since the STS-125 mission. Hopefully space fever spreads throughout the world once again!
The idea of interplanetary internet is a fun one, and I can't help but wonder if Richard Branson is already plotting his next peculiar endeavor.
