Oh, Gwyneth Paltrow. The Oscar winner recently made some comments about how much she loved Spain and how different it was from the US, citing their enjoyment of life more — and attributing it to a lack of cell phone connectivity.
She said:
"They aren't running around as much as in New York. They enjoy time with the family. They don't always have their BlackBerry on."
So . . . the key to happiness is letting your BlackBerry die and not recharging it right away?
Maybe she meant not having it always attached to your head (which gets awkward in intimate situations anyway), but I don't think that my level of happiness would shoot up if I turned my cell phone off.
What do you make of Ms. Paltrow's quote?

I didn't see that quote that way at all... I gather she's just talking about their culture and how it isn't as electronically-fanatical as our culture currently is.
1Nah, it's not so bad; key word "always". I have to agree. I mean I don't know first-hand but my teacher from Barcelona says the same thing; moving to LA was a big change for her. It's very laid-back in Spain, I mean siestas?! Literally taking naps, businesses included?
It's awesome. We're so wired 'cause we're so, well, wired (ha!).
2Last week, while on vacation, I lost access to data services on my BlackBerry for 3 days. I could still send and receive calls and text messages. However, I must admit the interruption of service was less than enjoyable. Frankly, I don't get a lot of opportunity to touch base with my social circles and using quick status updates has become a useful part of my everyday. It was rather frustrating to feel disconnected. Even worse was the deluge of information and updates once service was restored. The experience was more than a tad overwhelming. Like it or not, there is an inherent dependence on the constant connectivity. I do not see this as an impediment, rather it allows me to be more accessible and enhance relationships I would otherwise not be able to nurture.
3I just lost my job so I turned off the data on my BlackBerry to save some money until I find my next job and let me tell you at first I felt completely disconnected from the world and now it's really nice. If you really and I mean really need me, you'll call.
It really
silences the background noise.
4Oh Geek, don't take her comment literally. I'm sure she meant that the people in Spain are more family-centered than in the States, and investing time in those relationships face-to-face are what makes them happy.
5As mentioned above, the key is "always". You've got to turn off the BB for some time, if you're confused about it I'd think you're (in general) losing some of the charms of life.
6I like having my BB with me, just not attached to my head all them time
It's nice when you can control not having access to the phone... but when its something you cant help it can be rather stressful as I found out about a month ago
