How times have changed since I was in high school, when the only thing you got for free was a dented locker: The state of Maine has agreed to provide Apple MacBooks to every public school student, grades 7 through 12.
The Maine Department of Education has already ordered over 64,000 laptops for students and staff, to make Maine the first and only US state to ensure that every public school kid in middle and high school has a laptop to work on. The students are allowed to use the computers at school and take them home, but they have to return them at the end of the school year to pass to the next classes.
Bravo to Maine for making an important — and very expensive — educational tool so widely available for its youth. I also love that there's a standard for Macs as well — guess someone on that board is a Mac.

Now that will make me go back to school!
1Bravo, Maine! That's is awesome!
2what a bamboozlin' idea!
3That is just awesome. I would have loved that in high school.
4Wow. Amazing. Bravo Maine.
5cool, but what about accidently breaking the macbook? you know not every kid is that responsible & some parents might even say no if they think their kid might accidently damage it & get charged.
my friend had his MBP for one week and he accidently cracked the screen when he was closing the laptop to put in his bag! that is not covered by apple care.
6Awesome!!! I want my college to do the same! blah! X_X that´s not gonna happen!
7anyway... great for Maine!
i certainly hope they have insurance because i can see this becoming an expensive repair situation. if a kid breaks the computer are the parents on the hook for it? what if someone else's kid breaks it? what if a sibling did? i think i would opt out without those questions answered.
8wow
9that is really great
i wish my university will do that too
i can dream
The article says:
"As part of the deal, Apple plans to provide the state with educational software, professional development, repair and replacement, and technical support."
10Cool.
11Woah, cool!
12that is so COOL.
13but because it's for school and all, would sites like facebook be blocked?
LAME! A netbook would be much more convenient!
14btw: for those whining above, colleges do do this! Well, they don't supply macbooks because they realize that it's a waste of money, but many private schools do provide you with a laptop to keep forever.
I just see laptops as completely impractical now that netbooks are so cheap and light.
15Is it the $999 white Macbook? That won't hold up worth a damn. The cases have a well-known cracking issue, and the performance is mediocre. Too bad they couldn't go with the $1299 unibody, a much more solid, reliable machine.
