You know you spend a little too much time on Google when you instantly notice a new font or logo change. Sure enough, my keen eye spotted Google's fresh new logo look which has transformed all of the basic Google categories — like news, shopping, maps, etc. I can't figure out the exact font, but whatever it may be, things sure do look a lot simpler. The font looks a lot like Helvetica 47 Light Condensed, but I don't think it's the exact same font!!
looks fine to me, really now interested in the fonts some sites use, as long as i can read it, i don't usually spend that much time noticing those minor details!!
The font is actually a custom font designed by Hoefler & Freré-Jones specifically for Google. Supposedly it is a beta of General, a family of typefaces that Kevin Dresser is developing with H&FJ, but the only place it's been rolled out so far is on the Google product branding.
I like the cleaner look.
This was actually discussed by Google back in May. http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/05/new-logo-look.html
