Capture Fireworks Like a Pro With These Tips
With the Fourth of July right around the corner, your camera will probably be getting a good workout with all of the fireworks action. Here are some tips for conquering fireworks shots.
- You don't want trees, light poles, or buildings obstructing your shots, so be sure to stake out your spot early to nab the perfect angle.
- If you can, use a tripod so your shots are free of vibrations that could cause those annoying squiggly lines. If you don't have a tripod, steady the camera by placing it on a mailbox, the roof of your car, or even an ice chest you've hoisted onto your table.
- If you do want the light trails to show up in your pics, be sure to decrease the shutter speed on your camera. Shutter speeds from two to 15 seconds should let you capture the full firework launch and explosion all in one shot.
- Some new cameras have a built in "Fireworks" setting, but if yours doesn't, make sure you turn off the flash, turn on your camera's noise reduction, and use your self timer to reduce vibration.
- Make sure you have lots of memory sticks in hand and remember to have fun!

I use a remote and tripod with my D60. You just press the button on the remote to open the shutter, and press again to close it. it's super easy and works great for lightning too.
